Description

A case of 5 year old girl who came in to ER departments with the parents complaining of difficulty in breathing, with hives and rash extending more than the affected site. According to Swanson’s theory of caring, there are 5 processes that we have to apply. First is the maintain belief. In this process since our patient is a child, we do our intervention always involving the child and parent’s consent. We offer realistic and optimistic approach and maintain a hope-filled attitude. In the second process, Knowing, we assess thoroughly the patient and avoid any assumptions. We inform the Attending Physician regarding the chief complaints. Being with, as the third process, includes letting the patient share her feelings, convey the nurse’s availability making her feel that she is not alone in this whole process. Doing for, we anticipate the needs and comfort the patient. This is also the time that we perform the procedure that needs to be done example, giving medications and oxygen therapy as per doctor’s order. Enabling , we inform the procedure to be done, and allow the parents and child to participate fully with the interventions. This also includes validating the feelings of the patient through the whole process and letting them participate in any way the interventions feel less invasive to the child. By using Swanson’s Caring Theory (Alligood, 1994) , we cultivate a healthy and wholistic approach in caring for the needs of the patient’s well-being....
