SWOT Analysis – Useful for Strategy Assessment SWOT analysis involves an examination of a firm’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This examination should be helpful in evaluating a firm’s strategies to take advantage of competitive strengths or to defend against its weaknesses. The strengths of a company provide the firm a comparative advantage in the marketplace and can include good customer service, high-quality products, strong brand image, customer loyalty, innovative research and development, market leadership, and strong financial resources. Weaknesses often result when competitors have potentially exploitable advantages over a firm. When weaknesses are identified, a firm can identify and implement strategies to mitigate or correct the weaknesses. Opportunities that favor a firm can include a growing market for the firm’s products, shrinking competition, favorable exchange rates, and identification of a new market or product segment. Threats are environmental factors that can limit a firm in achieving its goals. Examples include a slowing domestic economy, slowing economies overseas, new and additional governmental regulation, increases in industry competition, threats of new entrants into the industry, buyers or suppliers seeking to increase bargaining power, or new technologies that can make a firm’s products obsolete.
