Description

Situation analysis of Timber set homes The target market/demographic for Timberset homes are: 

 

Upper middle clients due to these homes being more expensive then their nonenvironmentally friendly counterparts due to the materials and procedures used in the manufacturing process Environmentally conscious customers who want to leave a smaller carbon footprint in their community First home owners who care about the environment

Competitors of Timberset homes are fellow building companies local to Ballarat such as Gj Gardener Homes, McMaster designer homes and Dennis family homes to name a few. Although these building companies aren’t eco friendly they are the main competitors in the region. On an ecofriendly basis there are smaller building companies in the Ballarat region with a similar profile to Timberset such as Bryan & Peterson, Joseph De Losa Design Build and Passive Builders. These companies are extremely similar to Timberset with them building in the bracket of 1-4 house’s each year. The challenges of running an eco-friendly building company such as Timberset will always be trying to find the right customer base. As the price for these houses are relatively high in the housing market, as the laws of economics state the demand for them will be low (Beattie & Taylor & Watts, 1985). Timberset’s competitive differentiator is their hard focus on sustainability. Timberset homes are extremely environmentally conscious regarding the materials they use and where they are sourced from. On their website they continually emphasize how they are having a positive impact on the environment by using the materials they use, and this is where they can gain a competitive edge over local building companies as aforementioned. A SWOT analysis is an “analytical tool which should be uses to categorize significant environmental factors both internal and external to the organization” (Pickton & Wright, 1998). The following graph is a SWOT analysis of Timberset homes’ social media presence and of their website:

Strengths  Consistent message of sustainability and an ecofriendly approach across all platforms  Awareness of sustainability evident on their website

Weaknesses  There are no photos of the builders building the houses or working on any house or even on any model  No photos of the owners of the company across any platform  Not a huge follower base on either Facebook (120 likes)/Instagram (14 followers)

Opportunities  Hire a social media advisor  Partnerships with a publisher/advertiser  Making a time-lapse video of construction of one of their projects

Threats  Inconsistent social media presence

Timberset homes’ social media/website strengths lie in their consistency to continually enforce the message of sustainability. On their website on the main page there is the message “Buildings that are

healthy for you, great for the environment, and won’t cost the earth.”. This sort of message is relayed across both social media platforms as well with hashtags such as “#sustainable” and “#ecofriendly” being used across all Instagram posts. One of Timberset’s weaknesses are their lack of photos them working on any sort of house or any building for that matter. The photo’s uploaded are either finished projects (scarce) or CGI type pictures of models of houses. By uploading photos of them building and making progress one some of their projects will help build trust in their brand throughout their followers. Another weakness that was discovered was that there was no photos or profiles of the owners/builders across any platform. By creating online profiles of the owners/builders on their website/social media platforms will increase band equity. Customers will be able to associate a face to the business and will be able to recall and remember the business more easily. It is also well known that consumers tend to interact less with brand profiles as they don’t see a real person behind it. Timberset also have a minimal follower base on social media. These numbers and their online presence need to be boosted if they want to expand and grow as a business. Opportunities for Timberset include hiring a social media advisor, making partnerships with a publisher/advertiser and making a time lapse video of one of their projects. By hiring a social media advisor Timberset will be able to get the right recommendations regarding their social media presence and will help them increase it. Also, by partnering with a local advertiser they will be able to hopefully increase their followers on social media and raise awareness about their building company in the local area. A great opportunity for Timberset lies in the production of a time lapse video of the production of one of their projects. These types of videos have the potential to get thousands of views and would be a great opportunity to showcase the quality of the build that they praise on their website. A threat with their social media may be their inconsistent posting. Timberset tend to post sporadically which isn’t a good look for a business. By posting consistently Timberset will be able to prove that they are a reliable brand to their follower base and will create trust in their business.
