Business Intelligence Software at SYSCO

Main characters: Twila Day is the main protagonist in this case study. She is the Assistant Vice President of Technology and Applications. Other characters are Bernard Liautaud (CEO), John Olsen (President), David Kellogg (Senior Vice President Worldwide Marketing), Joni Kahn (Vice President World Wide Professional Services), and Scott Bajtos (Vice President Customer Care and Renewals). Reflection: SYSCO company has decided to deploy advanced business intelligence (BI) software to enhance better use of information gathered through different operating companies and to assist better customer satisfaction. The company mainly focused on the distribution and supply of food and other related products to different restaurants, healthcare and educational institutions in Canada and the US. Based on organizational structure, SYSCO was considered a decentralized structure that consists of both broad line and specialty companies to provide the combined financial needs of the organization. SYSCO also managed to have its own IT system and ERP system. However, compared to the Information Technology system, which does not guarantee correct customer information was not as effective a tool as the Enterprise Resource Planning System. They considered the ERP system as the best tool for their business. Similarly, Datawarehouse was necessary to identify and monitor the different parts coming from all the corporations. This will help to analyze and maintain all the operating companies’ information in one place without any difficulty and time consumption. However, the assistant vice president of Technology and Application, Twila Day felt that the data warehouse was not consistent enough to make a better decision or a right conclusion. Therefore, it was necessary to establish BI software to tackle these problems.

Issues: 

  

Operating companies having the same application does not have the assurance to gather the same information. Thus, they are configured differently and loaded with different information. The company was also unable to get accumulated daily sales reports with the business process application system. The information contained in the data warehouse was also another issue concerned with the company as it has difficulty making proper decisions and conclusions. Lack of technical expertise was also another problem faced by SYSCO for analyzing and monitoring the exact information from the data warehouse.

Business Objects:

The Business Objects was the vendor providing Business Intelligence Software to SYSCO. They helped the company to solve two questions about their operating companies. These include:  

What additional products needed to sell to each customer? Which of their customers are most likely to have lost?

These questions were a predictive and covered way for the Business Objects analytic applications. Therefore, Day decided to find which is the best software modules to license based on three scenarios such as “Bare Bones, “Middle of the Road”, and “Volume Discount” before the approval by the director’s council. Questions: 1. Are these two questions addressed by SYSCO is enough for making a proper decision regarding the company’s growth and future? 2. Would the BI implementation bring positive change to the company’s future market force? 3. Which is the best scenario most suitable for Business Intelligence software for the company? 4. Will it be difficult for the Business Intelligence software provided by business object team to manage large companies like SYSCO having wide data sources to analyze accurate information without any delay?
