Professor Medow TCH 201 Equal Chapter 3: Culture and Socialization In Chapter 3 of Is Everyone Really Equal? “ Culture and Socialization”, the authors discuss the importance of culture and socialization in the classroom. “Culture is the norms, values, practices, patterns of communication, language, laws, customs, and meanings shared by a group of people located in a given time and place. It refers to the characteristics of everyday life of a group of people located in a given time and place.” The way one’s culture values different things affects the way an individual sees the world. The practices and values that these cultures hold greatly shape a person and how they interact with others. Although some cultures see other religions or lifestyles as wrong or immoral, this doesn’t make them so just because they don't match up with this particular cultures. No one will ever all agree to the same things and it is a fact of life that there will always be disagreements and discrepancies within different groups. “Socialization refers to our systematic training into the norms of our culture. Socialization is the process of learning the meanings and practices that enable us to make sense of and behave appropriately in that culture.” I t is crucial that children are taught at a young age about social justice so that they can grow up with these values instilled in them. The younger they are when they are taught these core values, the more likely they are to carry them with them throughout adulthood.

Cultural norms and conformity is something that should be ingrained in education at a young age. Students should know what these cultural “norms” are so that they are able to make their own decisions for how they want to present themselves. Conformity is not a positive thing and children should not be pushed towards this. They should not be forced to fit and ideal that society deems “the goal”. One aspect of this is gender and sexual identity. It has been ingrained in our society for so long that the definition of love applies to man and woman but this is not the case. The idea of being queer is often overlooked and not always acknowledged and is definitely not represented enough within society and in the media. Even though most people acknowledge the idea of socialization, very few apply it to their own lives and put it into practice. M  any people hold this ideal of equality but very few take action towards achieving it. The influence that it has on people is astounding, the culture of a society greatly shapes their views and ideals. Conversely, many think that they are already treating everyone equally while this is not the case. There is no way for humans to be completely unbiased or objective, it is simply not humanly possible. Although we can do our best to minimize the amount of bias we have towards people, it is impossible to treat everyone exactly equally. The groups that you belong to greatly shape your views. Cultural, religious and racial groups are all examples of groups that have ideals and morals that can shape your views of the world. These different groups are what make humans unique and allow everyone to have their own opinions....
