1. Introduction: the WHAT a. Define human nature: human nature is commonly described as the core essence of how humans naturally behave, think, and feel - the fundamental traits that separate humans from all other living creatures. b. Describe various theories i. Some scholars and philosophers have theorized that humans are naturally selfish and violent (such as John Locke), whereas others have had a more optimistic perspective and believe humans to be fundamentally good and altruistic (like Karl Marx) ii. Christianity largely interprets human nature to be, at its core, good, but corrupted by sin due to the actions of Adam and Eve or from the corruption of the devil; Christians generally believe that humans were made in the image of a loving and inherently good God, but that either through Satan’s deceit or due to the original sin, our once good natures have been marred, reducing us from this once perfect image c. https://youtu.be/ws3Q-fWShW0?t=67

2. Description of myself: the WHO a. Before continuing on, I must outline my own perspective i. I am agnostic - I do not believe nor disbelieve in God or some other Supreme Being ii. Because I am not Christian, my interpretation of the Bible may be different than someone who is iii. With that being said, like the Bible, my beliefs surrounding human nature begin with sin 3. Sin, the Bible, and human nature: the WHY, WHEN, and WHERE a. Genesis, Adam and Eve, creation i. Genesis (https://youtu.be/T6f1-nEjDdM?t=153) 1. The genesis story tells us that God made humans (Adam and then later, Eve) in His image, humans were made perfect and good, for God is perfect and good ii. Original sin (https://youtu.be/xn0tevbrn2E?t=82) 1. However, following the sins of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, humans fell from this perfect state and are thus born with an inherently sinful nature, as described in Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” This inherent

sinfulness of all humans resulting from the disobedience against God of Adam and Eve is what St. Augustine called the “Original Sin” - he believed that this was the reason for human sinfulness and he believed that sin was a part of human nature and was caused by the individual, not by the Devil or some other outside force a. Because God also granted humans the gift of free will, the cause of sin residing within the individual (as St. Augustine suggested) is thus supported, as free will grants us all the ability to choose to be bad or to be good. We can choose to follow God or follow sin, as is outlined in Romans 6:16, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” b. Many Christians believe that through following the Holy Spirit, we can overcome this sin nature and enter into the Kingdom of God to live eternally, apart from sin i. As stated in Galatians 6:8, “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” c. However, it is also important to note here that some Christians, especially those with Calvinist leanings, believe in the total depravity of humans, and thus think that humans are incapable of overcoming their depraved nature 2. Though some Christian denominations agree with St. Augustine and declare the Original Sin as the origin of man’s sinful nature, other denominations believe that sin originates with Satan, not with Adam and Eve a. Many churches preach about the terrors of the devil and warn of the devil’s suggestions against God i. Brigham Young, second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a pioneer of Mormonism wrote that “In the first place the spirit is pure, and under the special control and influence of the Lord, but the body is of the earth, and is subject to the power of the Devil, and is under the mighty influence of that fallen nature that is of the earth. If the spirit yields to the body, the Devil then has power to overcome the body and spirit of that man, and he loses both” 4. History and human nature: the HOW (also when and where)

a. Regardless of the causes of human nature, most Christians would likely agree that humans are inherently sinful and thus this is the cause for many evil acts and atrocities on earth committed by people b. Fortunately, history has shown that people can also choose to be good; Christians believe that by following and obeying God and by trusting in Christ, one’s sinful nature can be overcome i. As described in Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” By obeying God and following Christ, people can ‘erase’ their previous, sinful nature and, as described in Ephesians 4:24 “put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” 5. Why thinking about human nature is important to the course a. The concept of human nature is clearly a divisive one, but learning about and studying the way other people and communities perceive human nature is important to deciphering much of how they perceive the world as a whole

As famously stated by scholar Ninian Smart “she who knows but one religion knows none”...
