TEAMWORK REFLECTION ##

ASSIGNMENT 1 B – PART 2 48230 – ENGINEERING COMMUNCATION

Teamwork Reflection Personally, the transition from traditional face-to-face to online learning due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic was difficult to adjust to, as it was imposed onto a 'rookie' university student in Week 2 of the first semester of my first year in university. I has some comfort that I was not alone as is pandemic affected the whole student body and faculty staff. This radical change also caused poor communication between members of the group as none of the group members had the opportunity to form friendships prior to the group's formation. This lack of connection persisted for some time, where we were just mere acquaintances for several weeks. It wasn't until a member began discussing topics of interest that we broke the awkwardness of online learning. With this barrier now broken, the team started to bond and communicate better. However, this led to an explosion of ideas being suggested with none being decided upon. This is where I took the initiative and assumed the role of 'team leader' in order to make group executive decisions. This made many positive contributions towards the productive use of the time remaining before the submission date of the first task. Each successive task brought new challenges for the group. The original communication issues at times resurfaced and task deadlines were not being met. I had to use a different approach in order to resolve them. With the major deliverable report for the Engineering Without Borders (EWB) challenge approaching its deadline, I allocated the sections of the report to a team member based on their discussed abilities (during the team meetings) with an appropriate deadline. By effectively project managing the team and the tasks, I was able to ensure that the team was able to make effective use of their time to achieve the deadline. While the allocated sections of the report were being written, including the sections allocated to myself, I still continued to support the group members in their individual tasks through proof-reading and commenting on their written work. I am happy to take on this extra work. By doing this, the report was more comprehensive and consisted of a cohesive narrative. The experience that I gained in working in a team environment highlighted the importance of communication and collaboration in teamwork, especially during virtual meetings and team tasks. After having completed the team assignments, I undertook personal research on how to optimise team effectiveness. For future group assignments that require team collaboration, I shall be taking the following learnings into consideration: • Trust in each member (Smartsheet, 2020); • Clarify and define each member's role (Agius, 2019); • Have clear communication from the beginning (Lydna & Erickson, 2007); • Appreciate a wide range of ideas (Smartsheet, 2020). Throughout the course of the EWB challenge, the group has overcome the current world health challenges and the value of each individual member has become apparent. In this group, all members have established lasting connections where the group hopes for future opportunities to work together.
