This terminology is due on the first day of the week assigned. -ectomy: surgical removal of a specified part of the body -lysis: destruction, detachment freeing -orrhaphy: suturing, stitching -oscopy: making an artificial opening into -ostomy: surgical creation of an opening -otomy: surgical incision, cutting -plasty: surgical repair, molding Arthroscopy: minimally invasive surgical procedure on a joint, used to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. Adhesion: the union of two opposing tissue surfaces, such as the sides of a wound Anesthesia: a state of controlled, temporary loss of sensation or awareness that is induced for medical purposes, including surgery. Analgesia: insensibility to pain without loss of consciousness, absence of sense of pain. Laparotomy: a surgical procedure involving a large incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity. Thoracotomy: an operation to open the chest, usually in order to gain access to the lungs or heart. Amputation: the removal of a limb by trauma, medical illness, or surgery. Sedation: either the state of being relaxed or sleepy because of a drug, or the act of drugging someone with a sedative. Intubation: to put a tube in, commonly used to refer to the insertion of a breathing tube into the trachea for mechanical ventilation. Thrombosis: the formation or presence of a blood clot in a blood vessel. Incentive spirometry: a medical device used to help patients improve the functioning of their lungs. Commonly used to prevent pneumonia. Atelectasis: a complete or partial collapse of the entire lung or area of the lung.

Hyperthermia: overheating of the body, possibly due to extreme weather conditions. Dehiscence: a rupture or splitting open, as of a surgical wound, or of an organ or structure to discharge its contents. Evisceration: the process whereby tissue or organs usually reside within a body cavity are displaced outside that cavity, usually through traumatic disruption of the wall of the cavity. Asepsis: the state of being free from disease causing microorganisms.
