Role Comparison
Description
Strengths-Based
A boss who is focusing on their employee’s strengths and what they did well, to give them an idea of what they are good at.
Focus on: the strengths that the performer had, their design elements, the reaction they gained from the audience.
Prescriptive
A doctor giving a patient medicine so that they get better.
Focus on: ways they could improve and enhance their performance.
Descriptive
An author narrating what they saw (no judgement, no opinion, just observations).
Focus on: explaining what you saw and what you think it meant.
Evaluative
A teacher grading and giving a reason for that grade.
Focus on: selecting some aspects of their performance, grading it (meeting expectations, exceeding expectations) with a reason.
Motivational
A best friend trying to motivate their friend and make them feel good about themselves.
Focus on: the positives and making them want to perform and revise their work (*note this is different than simply focusing on strengths)...
