The Ainu Mythology Analysis...

Description

The legend of Kotan Utunnai is a mythological story of the Ainu people who are based in Japan. The myth which is narrated in the first person talks about Kottan Utunnai who after the death of his father and mother in wars, at the pity of the gods was rescued by his sister and taken to Kotan utunnai Moshiri utunnai a region of seclusion where neither the gods nor the demons approach. The issue of life after death is mentioned to great lengths in this mythology. It is perceived that an individual who was a right person after his death becomes an angel whereas an evil person after his death becomes a demon. The issue is one that is universally accepted in most societies. There are those who believe evil-doers go to the demons and the right people go to the gods when they die. This is significant in that it pushes members of the society to conduct themselves in a socially accepted manner as these determine where they will go after their death or who they will become after their death. The spirits of death going to east or west serves to show that once you die you go too far and inaccessible place. The story is told in the first person is significant in that it allows the narrator the legend of Kottan Utunnai to explain to us into details some of the religious beliefs of the Ainu people. In the story, we also see people who share the same origin are close. Take the instance of the woman of Chiwasphet and the legend of Kottan Uttunai. The ambiguity of the mortal status of the cast seems to give them an edge over the gods during wars. For instance, in the fight in Shipish, the gods exclaims how Kottan Uttunai being a human was able to break his armor something which the gods were unable to do. He disappears into thin air and murders the god. In conclusion, based on my reading of the story it is evident that in most societies good is often rewarded and evil punished....
