There is a widely-accepted viewpoint that the degree of a student’s learning in academics may be determined by the grades a student earns for a period of learning. It is also believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that would account for the grades. It has been interplay of so many factors such as gender, IQ, study habits, age, year level, parent’s educational attainment, social status, number of siblings, birth order, etc. Well-developed study habits help a student perform well in class and will undeniably accomplish his or her goals in life. In this essay, I am going to investigate the underlying relationship of study habits and the factors affecting it to the academic achievement in university. Well-developed study habits are the key to academic success. Believe it or not, knowing your dominant learning styles can be crucial to boost your learning abilities, and establish your study zone is a decisive move for your output. In fact, many researches have shown that students are able to perform better on exams if they adjust their study approaches to their own unique routines. For instance, some students are visual-learners, who apprehend best concepts they have seen, some apprehend knowledge they have heard, while others apprehend things they have involved in (Fleming, abouteducation.com). Frank Pogue once did a research project purposing that students should guarantee they have a comfortable study environment, a study chair, good light, suitable room temperature and a quiet atmosphere, which means they have to minimize their both external and internal noise (Pogue, AcademicTips.org). However, there are some need

Having sound study skills also plays a vital role in academic performance. Study habits and skills are particularly critical for students pursuing their higher-education degrees, whose demands includes internet skills, note-taking, time management, concentration, and exam preparation. A study conducted by the University of Kentucky was to determine whether college success can be enhanced with the Student Attitude Inventory(SAI), which are composed of 47 items on the basis of: test technique, motivation, lack of distractions, and study methods. Students in six Kentucky community colleges were requested to show their attitudes towards study skills. There were 996 students in the sample population (413 males and 583 females). A measure of capability (ACT score) and academic performance (GPA) were collected from each student. As it turned out, the Student Attitude Inventory indeed contributes a statistically substantial amount of variance beyond an ability measure for college students (Thompson, springerlink.com). Here are some very useful recommendations to engage in learning better. First, conquer procrastination. Despite the fact that many things can possibly take your mind off of the time you need to finish your homework, it is necessary to know that you will eventually end up putting things off till it is too late (Fleming, abouteduaction.com). Second, assign tasks wisely. Start with the most difficult assignments first, while you still feel clearheaded as well as energetic. Third, do a basic overview before beginning the work. Attempt to absorb the thoughts of the writers and master the underlying knowledge expected to cover. Balanced social activities with good study habits serve as catalysts in students’ academic achievements. According to Mark Crilly, “A diversion from students will alleviate stress and help prevent from becoming fatigued”. He suggested that a student must take a break from time to

Try to make friends with whom you share similar learning methods, and study together with them. Don’t forget to spare some time between the busy schedule to socialize. You will feel more refreshed and ready to work the next day (Ukpong& George, 2013) In conclusion, as I mentioned above, students can find their own study styles fit to their characteristics, obtain good study skills, and enjoy socializing to attain better results on their gradebooks. Remember, it is never too late to foster great study habits. If you want to improve your grades, why not take some of the advice above and start making great changes in your learning.
