Description

“The Elephant Vanishes” is a story about a mysterious case of an elephant disappearing with his keeper, and the narrator's journey of solving the case by keeping the articles and everything related to the case in his scrapbook in order to understand what happened. The narrator tells the story months later to a woman he meets at a business party, he tells her his perspective and his side of the story about him being the last person to see the elephant, and what is strange, he told her that he believes that he saw that the size difference between the elephant and the keeper, that it somehow shrunk and that he felt in that moment that the reality shifted, the women got confused and they never met again. After that, the people seemed like they have forgotten that the town once had an elephant, and the case was kept mysterious. I chose to read this story in particular because I was attached by the name and especially the word “Vanished”, so I was curious to know how the elephant vanished, and I love elephants too, so that reason was enough for me to start reading the story from the first word to the last one. The quote I chose, it's from the first page, paragraph 20, where Murakami. H (n.d) assumed “Maybe the elephant understood a few simple words (it had certainly been living long enough), or perhaps it received its information through variations in the taps on its leg. Or possibly it had some special power resembling mental telepathy and could read the keeper’s mind.” because I felt the connection between animals and their keepers. You always feel like the one who’s keeping an animal and taking care of it has a special connection, they start understanding each other’s thoughts, which is unique and beautiful. I highly recommend students to read this story, it is interesting and well written. Reference: Murakami. H. (n.d). The Elephant Vanishes.
