”The Flowers” by Alice Walker Introduction: The text is about a little girl named Myop who lives on a farm with her family. Myop had explored the woods behind the house and she has done that many times, but this time was different. This trip took her to a strange place that was not as pleasant as her usual haunts and therefore began Myop to circle back to the house. Then she just smacks into a man’s eyes and then she got lodged with her heel right between the brow and nose. Myop just looked at the man who had broken or cracked all his bones and gazed around the spot with interest to see what had happened and the summer was over.

Analysis: The narrator in the text is third person because the narrator doesn’t take place in the story. The narrator observes from the outside and we only hear about these observations for example: ”Myop carried a short, knobby stick”. The narrator is very describing and detailed in the way she is telling the story like for example ”an armful of strange blue flowers with velvety ridges and a sweetsuds bush full of the brown fragrant buds”. The usage of words in the text is rare for example: ” denim, noose, benignly, limb and velvety”. The narrator’s point of view is also third person. The narrator moves freely and unlimited in the story, and therefore she is an omniscient narrator E.g. We know the narrator is omniscient because she knows that Myop and her mother often gather nuts together among the fallen leaves in the late autumn. There are three persons in the text: Myop, the mother and a man. We have Myop who is the main character in the text and we follow her character threw out the story. Myop is a ten-year child and have a creative imagination for example she explores the woods and the song she had in her head was the only thing she focused on, not the danger in the woods. Therefore are Myop also brave because she doesn’t expect anything bad would happen to her. The only thing we hear about the mother is that she and Myop often gather nuts among the fallen leaves in the late autumn. At last we hear about a man and the only thing we hear is the description of his look. Like all his clothes has rotted away except some threads of blue denim.

The setting in the text takes place at a farm and this because there are all kinds animals like a hen house to pigpen. We also hear about a sharecropper who is a man that owns a farm. The story takes place in the summer time and this is seen in the end of the text where it says, “ Myop laid down her flowers and the summer was over”. The story takes place in the countryside where there is a house and behind the house are there woods The story follows the narrator time and therefore there are some flashbacks like when the narrator looks back at the time when Myop and her mother gather nuts. The story’s theme is about losing innocence and that happens when Myop discovers a lying dead man in some underbrush. In the start of the story are Myop thinking that the world is a beautiful place to live and there is no such a thing called evilness. There are only great things like flowers and the safe things she knows about. So the meaning of the text is the journey from innocence to experience or from ignorance to experience. You can compare it to Myop’s journey where she goes

Frederik Østergaard 26/2/2016 Engelsk Stil from thinking the world is a beautiful place to “dropping the flowers” and that means that she is dropping the idea, that the world is of pure beauty....
