The Notion of 'WOMAN' in R. K. Narayan's The Dark Room and Waiting for the Mahatma Muzaffar Khan * Dr. G. S. Rathore ** ABSTRACT R. K. Narayan is the grand old man of Indian-English literature. His works have established him as the most popular of the three founding pillars of Indian novelists in English along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. The attempt in this article would be to study the position of female characters in a couple of his well-known novels, viz. The Dark Room and Waiting for the Mahatma. This paper purports to look upon his women characters in the pre- and post- independence period of India and the socioeconomic background in which Narayan portrays his women personae. He shows their roles both in family and in social life. In his canon, the Indian women can be seen to go through a process of evolution. Key-words : Characterization, Feminist, and Evolution. INRODUCTION R.K.Narayan is the doyen of Indo-Anglian fiction. In his writings, there is a compassionate humanism which makes him more imaginative and creative. His novels can be regarded as a socio-historical chronicle of India of his time – i.e. pre- and post-independence India.
