Quick Selection Tool, which sees the big edges, the Magic Wand Tool, which sees differences in luminance levels, of course on a channel-by-channel basis, and then finally, the Magnetic Lasso Tool, which is great for fine edges. Introducing the Quick Mask mode  Go to the second to last icon on the left panel  Go to window and choose channels  Double click on the quick mask thumbnail to change the color or opacity  Select brush tool o Increase the hardness to 100 % every time you edit a mask - otherwise you are going to introduce softness that is not actually there  Go to window and choose brush command o Decrease distant  To paint with deselection - press the switch button above the foreground and background colors  Select the quick mask mode (shortcut q key) to go back to edit mode The fastest way to save a selection  Spend more than 5 minutes - SAVE  Go to channels panel and choose the save selection as panel icon  To rename it, double click on it  Go to file menu, choose save, select TIFF format Gauging the quality of a selection  Enter quick mask mode (q key)  Zoom in on image  Go to image menu, adjustments, choose threshold. o Anything brighter than gray is turning white(selected), anything darker than gray is becoming black (deselected)  Press the q key to return  Go to select menu, choose select and mask  Switch view option to black and white Painting adjustments with the brush tool  Select the better edges thumbnail and choose load channel as selection  One click solution: o Ctrl and click on the thumbnail to load it as a selection  Select brush tool  Sway foreground for background color  Its better to select too little than too much  Fill a selection with white by clicking ctrl + backspace  X key to swap foreground and background colors  And shift click to deselect paint  To save

o Drag and drop onto the icon at the bottom to duplicate it o Exit mask mode Adding motion blur with the smudge tool  Go to smudge tool  Drag to smear things around  Wiggle back and forth to add more blur Reversing a mask with Invert  Convert to an independent layer o Double click on the background item and rename it  Convert to a layer mask by dropping down to the add layer mask icon at the bottom of layers panel  In quick mask mode: o Image menu, adjustments, invert  Go to marquee tool, choose duplicate layer, choose the other image to paste it. Applying a special-effects filter  Ctrl + alt + J to copy and rename  Select the layer mask  Image menu, adjustment, brightness/contrast  Turn on use legacy  Increase brightness value to 100  Click okay  Filter menu, filter gallery,  Texture, stain glass,  Press 5 key to reduce opacity  Stain glass is a random effect so it will be different every time  Press control z and control f over and over to pick one you like  Press 0 key to restore opacity value  Go to FX icon, choose stroke Smoothing a badly stroked edge  Press alt key and click on layer mask to see black and white o Then you can see soft edges  Select menu, select and mask  Change setting to on layers  Increase smooth value to max  Increase contrast to get rid of soft edges  To get rid of beak sticking out, drag other layer on top of second layer Selecting all the black lines  Click on bird layer  Go up to layer menu, chose fill layer, choose solid color - white  We want the highest degree of contrast  Convert to selection ouline o Click on first icon on the bottom panel  Press q key to select it  Click on fly out menu o Higher value - darker colors o Lowe value - lighter colors  Use eyedropper to identify darkest color

Image menu, adjustments, levels Click white eyedropper and click on darkest color  Invert the image (ctrt + I )  Click on the affect layer, layer menu, fill layer, solid color  Increase brightness layer to 50 % Expanding and contracting a selection  Select menu, modify and expand, expand, enter a 1  This makes the outlines thicker  Layer menu, new fill layer, hue and saturation are 0, brightness up to 50%  Fx icon, choose bevel emboss o follow instructions on lynda  Use darken mode - multiply on the bird  Use contrast mode - overlay on the bird 
