The Truman Show Review...

Description

 HSS 403 – Is Life a Simulation? - The Truman Show Review The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, is a comedy film that stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank. The main plot of the film is that the main character, Truman Burbank, is in a simulated reality TV show, that revolves around his life. However, Truman is totally unaware that he is constantly on camera and everything around him is planned and directed by Christof, played by Ed Harris. Truman lives in a fictitious island called Seahaven, which is realistically located somewhere near Los Angeles. Ever since Truman was born, he was constantly recorded by the various hidden cameras throughout the island, and everyone around him are actors. At the beginning of the film, it is not obvious that Truman is the center of a reality TV show, but the audience slowly realizes the reality of the plot slowly through given hints. At the same time, Truman begins to notice that no one seems natural, and everything has become a routine. In other words, the audience and Truman learn the reality of his life, and it allows the audience to relate to Truman to an extent. Although the plot of the film may seem serious, there were several moments in the film that were quite comedic. Selecting Jim Carrey as the main actor for the film was a wise decision, because his facial expressions are perfect for comedic scenes as well as serious scenes. For example, when Truman suddenly decided that he wanted to drive away from Seahaven, he is seen driving around like a maniac, and takes random spontaneous turns. This scene made Truman question his life, but also managed to make the audience laugh at the same time. The film brilliantly incorporates the serious plot and comedy together, and managed to provide the

audience with a good life but also make the audience question if they were also in a simulation themselves too. Overall, I give the film a 4 out of 5. The film provided some good quality comedy, while making the audience think at the same time. Combining such a thought provoking plot with comedy seemed like a difficult task, but the film achieved it....
