Description

TMA01 – Emma Starr Part One WC: 253 Explain how your personal interests around crime, harm and justice motivated you to study this module. Describe two examples or ideas from the materials in week 1 or 2 that have particularly interested you and explain why you found them engaging. My motivation to study Criminology and this module is that I like to question why people do the things that they do, why crime is defined in the way that it is and what triggers certain human behaviours. Two areas I have found particularly interesting is Millie’s work on Value Judgements and the different ways graffiti can be defined. The idea that we use Value Judgements then considering if something is a crime or a disorder rather than relying on legal considerations is fascinating. The four judgements; Moral, Prudential, Economic, and Aesthetic might be considered non exclusively i.e. Moral and Prudential, Is this right or wrong and is my life enhanced by this disorder? This idea is engaging as it gives us insight into why people have the beliefs they do and why some have extreme reactions to certain crimes or disorders. Prior to week one and two I had a biased opinion of graffiti. Being challenged to look at different ways graffiti can be defined made me view the topic from a more analytical position, considering if graffiti is a crime, art or political resistance and how social construction can play a role in beliefs, made me realise that the lines between these definitions can be blurred. For example Crime and Art in the work of Banksy, and in some Republican or Unionist murals in Belfast we could define them as Art, Crime and Political Resistance. It has made me realise the classification of graffiti as a crime is anything but straightforward. Part Two WC: 50 I have found learning about new concepts fascinating so far. One of which is Social Construction, it is referenced in Chapter 1 and we covered it briefly in the first tutorial. I would like to delve deeper into Social Construction. Can you advise of any other reading material on this?...
