Topic 1 DQ 1 The idea of “servant leadership” may be considered a paradox. Describe this paradox in the context of leadership.
Answer: In this context, let us take the example of Jesus. Jesus was never a minister of the State, neither he published any book, never held an office. But still, 2000 years after his death, we found the number of his followers more than that of any other leaders. This is true servant leadership. When superficially we find that Jesus has taken all the pain of his followers, is the effect he was able to pursue his path for a much long-term than that would have been achieved by any other leadership style. The paradox of servant leadership is thus not a paradox. It becomes a paradox to us when we do not understand the true essence of it. It must be understood that it is the followers who will take the ideas of the leader and become examples for the coming generations. In order to establish the paradoxical idea of servant leadership, the terms' servant 'and' leader 'have been brought together (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). Servant leadership is thus based on a belief that serving the followers is developing the followers. This is the best way to achieve goals in an organizational context. Servant leadership develops a number of important “soft” competencies, such as inspiring and motivating the followers, managing changes, and creating a positive work climate in the workplace. These competencies help the followers to take the idea of the leaders, after getting convinced about it and not by force or by getting overwhelmed. Thus the effect is longterm.
