Description

Topic 5 DQ 1 Go back to your readings in Chapter 4 of the text on bias. Reread the information to help you answer this question. Remember that bias can be found on a website. View the website noted here: https://www.naturalchild.org/articles/guest/john_breeding.html. What indications do you have that the site is biased or not biased? List three things that appear to make this site biased or unbiased. Finally, based on the criteria you have been learning about websites, do you believe this site is true and honest, or does it have an agenda? How might you address bias in your evaluation essay? During the week, go back and review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses?

Hello Prof. Palenque, After reading the article and looking it over its kind of obvious that this article is one-sided. You can see it in the authors' titles all the way down to the references that were used. The first thing that makes this article biased would be the title itself. The second thing would be the titles used throughout the article by the author. The third thing would be that the website is naturalchild.org. This would suggest to me that they want natural ways to improve children such as food and diets, activity and so on. Bias can be avoided in our essays by supporting statements and solid research from trusted sites such as .edu, .gov, present both sides, avoid stereotypes and your own biases should never be in your work.

Replies Hello Prof. Paleque and Classmates,

1. Something that strongly influences a person's perceptions are personal experiences through life and how they were raised as children. 2. In order for change to happen the individual has to acknowledge that what they were taught or what they think they know is wrong. And sometimes this information is rooted so deep inside of us that this process may take a long time to change. 3. The only thing that can be of value from certain biased views is that it will keep you on your toes and always searching for information and the truth.

Hello Lauren, I completely agree with you. This article and the website is completely one-sided and just pushing their agenda. I think it would have been much better if it showed an unbiased stance and provided good quality information from both sides. I do feel that ADHD is something that is being over-diagnosed for sure. And I really appreciate the parents who take the time to find out what is causing some of the kid's reaction. My nephew for example, something in red dye makes him a little unreasonable. This isn't the only thing that affects him. But my sister did a lot of research on her own and found better and healthier options for him. It wasn’t an easy process and took a lot of time and trial. But with some medicine, she gets from the holistic doctor and the research she did has paid off in the end and well worth it in my opinion.

Hello Donivon, I agree, this article and website, in general, is of biased information trying to persuade people that it is all bad in which case I don’t think it is. Sure medicine has different effects on people because everyone is distinctly different and not the same. That's why I'm a strong advocate of listening to the doctor but also doing some research on your own time and not taking what they say as gold and that’s just it. I would like to read something that has both sides, why it's bad and why it's good....
