DQ: Topic 7 DQ 1 Review the five functional areas within the HR department and explain which one you think is most important and why. Which of these five functional areas works most closely with the rest of the business as a strategic partner and how might this change depends on the type of company? How do the needs of an organization decide what human and capital resources are required to be successful?

Answer:

The functional area I think is most important within the HR department is career development. Retention issues was something I dealt with for 6 years in the military, saw too many people quite due to not being happy or satisfied. Retention rates were led by bad career development experiences (Schermerhorn, 2014). Good retention rates are so important for an organization to have because it heavily impacts a workforce. Many people felt they could not progress; it was too hard to progress or they were never provided the guidance to career progression like they should be. The career development function works most closely with the rest of the business as a strategic partner because it involves ensuring all individuals are growing and learning the way they are supposed to according to the standard. This makes career development a strategic partner because it is what keeps everyone experienced enough to develop strategy. This will never change depending on the company, career development is essential in every company, this is what achieves longevity and success for as long as possible. Needs of an organization decide what human and capital resources are required to be successful cause their certain required skillsets and expertise to be successful, these requirements are needs.

DQ: Topic 7 DQ 2 In what way is the HR function important to the success of the everyday tasks in an organization? Discuss the competitive advantages that can accrue to an organization that genuinely is committed to workplace diversity. Make certain that you indicate strategies for overcoming resistance to diversity programs.

Answer:

Human Resource Management is responsible for attracting, developing, and maintaining quality employees through processes such as recruitment, training, and career planning, in that order. In addition to these functions, HRM ensures quality of work life for employees by working to match each employee with a role that will best suit them within the organization and providing a proper work environment free from discrimination or harassment (Schermerhorn, 2016).

Quality employees can all come from different backgrounds, so it is important employees are protected against discrimination. With a diverse workforce comes a diverse worldview that con provide unique insight into market conditions, customer base, talent, and creativity (Feigenbaum, 2018). Diversity comes with its complications though. Women and minorities often experience workplace discrimination. It is HR's job to ensure discrimination is avoided. There are multiple laws protecting employees against discrimination. These include the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Affirmative Action, American with Disabilities Act, and many more (Schermerhorn, 2016). References Feigenbaum, E. (2018).
