Topic 2 DQ 1 Review the seven different emphases of servant leadership in Chapter 3 of the textbook. Which emphasis was most divergent from your view about servant leadership and which was most convergent? Explain your response.

Answer: The most divergent view I found to be was Poets, this emphasize the romantic and visionary aspects of Greenleaf’s writing, and the inspirational role played by literature, including poetry on his thinking. However, romanticists and visionaries move beyond poetry, believing that the widespread application of servant leadership can bring about fundamental changes in the very nature of society. With this view I did some additional research, when looking at the Poetry view, I found it to be a little confusing. I found The Egalitarians view to be convergent with Servant leadership, the speeches and writings of George SanFacon (for example, Awake At Work, 2008) epitomize the views of the Egalitarians, who view servant leadership as an opportunity to create new structures and governance in the workplace, thereby redistributing power from single managers to a wider community of participants. With this view I was able to relate with more, I think redistributing power from one person and empowering other is a true way of Servant Leadership. I feel that my ideas on servant leadership are parallel with the Egalitarians view.

You try to share your excitement with your supervisor and tell him/her you are taking a servant leadership class. His/her response is, “Servant leadership is overrated. You can’t get any real work done that way, you know. Coddling people and being a soft leader will not get you very far.” You brush off the remark but decide to revisit the subject with him/her later because you believe he/she has the wrong view about servant leadership. How do you think you would approach your supervisor on the subject? What should you say?

Answer: I would start off by asking to set up a time to discuss Servant leadership. Before the meeting I would gather some information on how Servant leadership has benefited other companies. I would start with: Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy in which the main goal of the leader is to serve. This is different from traditional leadership where the leader's focus is the thriving of their company or organizations. One of the goals is to empower the employees, this will make them feel a part of the company. Research has shown that happier employee leads to

better customer service, along with retention for the company. With this you will have employee that enjoy their job and feel lie their options are considered. Servant leadership will also help build a team....
