Transformation Process Every organization, be it a product or service organization, transforms certain inputs into outputs. For getting desired output, the quality of the inputs has to be monitored. The quality of actual output obtained also has to be continually compared with the desired output. Feedback mechanisms are required to monitor the performance of the transformation process. There may be some random disturbances hampering the transformation process of converting the inputs into desired outputs. These random disturbances are unexpected and sometimes not planned for. They are mostly due to external environment. Example of transformation: 1. Physical: manufacturing, mining 2. Location Services: transportation 3. Exchange Service: Retailing/Wholesaling 4. Storage Services: warehousing 5. Physiological: health care 6. Informational: telecommunications 7. Government services: local, state, control 8. Other private services: insurance, finance, utilities, real estate, business and personal services. The following figures show: 1. The transformation process for a purely service organization (an educational institution) 2. The transformation process for a hybrid service and manufacturing organization (a restaurant) 3. The transformation process for a purely manufacturing organization (a refrigerator manufacturer)

Characteristics of a Transformation 1. Transformation is enabled by 5P’s of production & operations management. 2. Managing transformation system involves continual monitoring of the system and environment. 3. Conversion or transformation process transforms some of the inputs into outputs which are useful for the consumers. 4. The output should have more value to the consumer than the cost of producing them. 5. Conversion is at heart of production function and is present in some form in all organizations. Example of Transformation Process Inputs Physical Transformation Ores Location Service: Taxi services Customer at railway station Exchange Service: Petrol pump Petrol in possession of the pump owner Govt. Services: Income tax office Information Physiological: Outpatient ward of a general hospital Unhealthy patients
