INTRODUCTION

My name is Nur Fatimah Binti Mohamad Noor Sa Iman and I’m from Alor Setar, Kedah. The course that I’m taking is Diploma in Accountancy. This course is the first choice for me to further my study after taking Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in 2019. It’s an honour for me to be a part of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Merbok, Kedah. I hope that I can achieve the best during my period of study here. This portfolio is created for the purpose of my Study Skill assignment under the subject of Study Skill (UED102). In this portfolio, I will present notes from every topic that I have learned with the help of Dr Nor Azrina Mohd Yusof, who provided me the teaching video by Madam Ida Normaya Mohd Nasir. In part 1 of Study Skill that I have learned during my interim week, it helps me a lot as a university student to be motivated and manage my time to study so that I can achieve my long- and short-term goals.

3

TOPIC 1 : GET READY TO LEARN

As a first-year student, we need to realise that university environment is different from high school environment. University is also the first step into the real world for students in which they’ll need to support themselves financially, maintain their own living space, and learn how to handle all the challenges that come with “adulting”. From the outside, university may seem like a walk in the park, but as any student or graduate will tell you, university can be stressful at times. Pushing yourself to persevere during those inevitable moments you’ll want to quit will build your resilience and make you a stronger person mentally. So, we need to take

High School

notes the differences between high school and university.

• There are subjects that you are forced to take • Timetable provided by school, usually from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. • Teachers gave all the guidance

• You will only study subjects that you like • Some days you may have lectures all day and other days may be completely free

• Need to find the informations by yourself

• Formal attire • Casual attire • Long learning period • Short learning period • More reading • More practical

MY LEARNING STYLE

In my 2nd week of part 1, I learnt about my learning style by doing the learning styles inventory. I prefer to use kinesthetic in my learning but I more to auditory and visual style. This is a few of skills that I do in my learning. There are :-

Explain information out loud Cover the details in your lecture notes and recite from the headings Teach the material to someone or something else Explain the steps for solving math problems Read and highlight text Edit your lecture notes Take online test Take notes as I read

TOPIC 2 : GOAL SETTING

A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person envisions, plan and commit to achieve. People endeavour to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines. You need to set your own goals to achieve to keep you on the right track. To achieve your goals, you can use SMART as your reference to make a perfect goal. SMART goal setting creates a verifiable trajectory towards a certain objective with clear milestones and an estimated timeline to attain the goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for :

M – Measurable A define figure to demonstrate the objective

TOPIC 4 : TIME MANAGEMENT

What is time management ? Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter, not harder so that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time will damages your effectiveness and causes stress. Time management is important for students so they can prioritize all their work tasks and achieve their goals faster. When you better manage your time, you'll be able to take on new opportunities.

2

Having a fixed-commitment calendar as a learner is very important as it helps you maximize and prioritize on the things that are of urgency or importance. Most students do not organize their routines, so they fail to follow the plan drawn. Fixed-commitment calendar :

Helps in getting through the exams Increase study productivity Helps in tackling time mismanagement Helps plan long-term Helps in tackling progress

TOPIC 5 : MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

What is Memory ? Memory refers to the processes that are used to acquire, store, retain, and later retrieve information. There are three major processes involved in memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Human memory involves the ability to both preserve and recover information we have learned or experienced. As we all know, however, this is not a flawless process. Sometimes we forget or misremember things. Sometimes things are not properly encoded in memory in the first place. Types of Memory :

Sensory Memory

Short-term Memory

The earliest stage of memory

Known as active memory

3-4 seconds

20-3- seconds Types of Memory

Long-term Memory Known as preconscious and unconscious

15

TOPIC 6 : TAKING LECTURE NOTES

Note-taking is one of the most important activities for students. There are a variety of reasons for it but we only want to highlight the most important one here. By taking notes, the writer records the essence of the information, freeing their mind from having to recall everything. But taking notes the right way isn’t as easy as it sounds. It isn’t simply about jotting down everything that you hear. Taking notes is about summarising core concepts as precisely as possible in your own words.

Why take lecture notes ? Promotes active listening Provides an accurate record of information Helps you organize the information Provides additional repetition

16

How to take lecture notes ? Evaluate your note-taking skills -

Consider the content that you recorded in your notes

-

Consider the organization : the way you structure the material

Prepare before taking notes -

Look at your course syllabus so that you know the topic of the class and what is going to be important to focus on

-

Briefly review notes from previous class sessions to help you situate the new ideas you’ll learn in this class

-

Keep organized to help you find information more easily later.

-

Keep separate notebook sections or notebooks for each class and keep all notes for each class together in one space, in chronological order.

Become an active listener Use an effective note-taking system -

The informal outline

-

The block method

-

The modified-block method

TOPIC 7 : ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND PERFORMANCE

What is Academic Integrity ? Academic integrity means putting those values into practise by being honest in the academic work you do at university, being fair to others and taking responsibility for learning. For students, your personal morals and values reflect your character and credibility. At university, maintaining academic integrity while earning your degree represents your true academic accomplishments. What is Plagiarism ? Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement by not providing credit, either deliberately or accidentally. Types of Plagiarism :

copy and paste presenting other people's work

reasoning style copying Types of Plagiarism copying analogies or metaphors

buying papers copying creative ideas or solutions

18

How to avoid Plagiarism ?

1

add a citation in your writing that identifies the full name of the source, the date it was published

2

using quotation marks around the text to denote that the words aren’t your own

3

paraphrasing is rewriting a source’s ideas or information into your own words, without changing its meaning. But be careful, paraphrasing can slip into plagiarism if done incorrectly.

4

present your own idea

19

CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, I learn so many things by completing this assignment. The most important thing that I learnt is about my learning style. After this, I can improve my learning skills to get better at studying. After all the hardships I’ve been through, I managed to make wonderful new friends while completing this assignment. They encouraged me in many ways so that I can complete this assignment with no pressure even though we’ve never met in person. Thanks to them. Last but not least, I’m looking forward to my journey in UiTM, Kedah.

Thank You !
