Mini-Case Study: Between a Rock and a Hard Place Unite 4 Written Assignment

University of The People

Between a rock and hard place is a case of a compromise, the matter here is the resolution and its impact on stakeholders. The situation is that there is a company calls K9DC which manufactures pet supplies, Nasira is the Procurement Specialist, it is her job to source the parts are needed for production, the company relies heavily on ‘‘Made in America’’ marketing strategy but in reality, the firm just outsourcesfi the materials and assemble them in Michigan plant. Also, Nasira must find the parts with a cost that fit the product line, the situation that she is facing is that the old supplier of fabric lining had gone out of business and the company is at risk of manufacturing delays if she didn’t finda new source immediately. Moreover, she had an email from her supervisor that if they didn’t find a new source immediately, they are looking at production delays. Nasira looked up two sources, but neither the company seemed ideal, and she resolved to keep looking.

The key facts of the case study: 1. Nasira has not found a good source yet 2. Nasira’s boss informed her that the firm currently is operating on an incredibly thin margin. 3. Sales have been down, and the company can’t afford a manufacturing delay. 4. Also, her boss informed her that the company is considering layoffs if she can’t find a source. Her job is at stake too. 5. The two sources are: 

Fab-Right Inc., an overseas manufacturer produces cheap fabric and chewproof, but Nasira is concerned with an underpaid worker, bad labor conditions, and no details on the environmental impact of manufacturing processes.

All-Fabric Inc., American supplier manufactures less durable fabric with chewing hazard for dogs, Nasira is concerned with a manufacturing process that contaminated local water, and people asked for government intervention.

The critical thinking strategy I used to analyze the situation and highlight key facts: I utilized the following critical thinking elements: interpreting, analyzing, connecting, and integrating. 

Interpreting and analyzing, I understood the significant meaning of information, then I broke information down into pieces as I tagged them with numbers.

Connecting and integrating, I made connections between related pieces of information then I combined them all together into a bigger picture, which will help me in the next phase which is problem-solving.

A recommendation to resolve the situation, along with reasons why you recommend this solution:

As I stated the key facts, I switched to the problem-solving phase, in which I identify the problem. The problem is that the company can not afford manufacturing delays, if it happens then the company is considering layoffs to compensate for the losses, and Nasira’s job is at stake too. Plus, Nasira has to make a quick decision to avoid manufacturing delays. Taking all key facts and risks into considerations, I would resolve that Nasira should pick the overseas Fab-Right Inc. because it is cheap, and it complies with the required standard which is chew-proof. In my opinion, it is not Nasira’s job to take care of overseas workers and environmental impact at this stage because the compromise would be her job and her colleagues’ job plus the company losses.
