Assignment of week 5. Analyzing the case study. ...

Description

Analysis: Between a Rock and a Hard Place This is a case about the work of a procurement specialist. In order to find out the key fact of this study case, the first strategy I use is “Analyze the topic” (King, 2015), which means splitting the material into different parts. This will help us clarify primary and secondary information and get to the point of the problem. From the materials we can derive the following information: 1. Nasira is one of the company's newest employees, working as a procurement specialist. 2. This week she needs to decide the supplier of fabric for her company's dog cots. If she completes this task, she may be promoted. Conversely, she may be made redundant. 3. The two companies she has found so far are not ideal, but she must make a choice. After analysis, it becomes clear that the key fact is Information 3: Make a choice between two companies because this determines Nasira's future in her company. Now we can conclude that the question we need to address is which company should Nasira choose as its supplier. And it is time for the second strategy: “Evaluate something” (King, 2015). Here are two companies as options. "Evaluate something" means to explain the value of each option, weighing the pros and cons. After all, critical thinking is the ability to use logic and reasoning to assess the value of an idea, often used to help us make choices and draw conclusions (College Success, 2015). This table will help us quickly figure out the strengths and weaknesses of both companies: Fab-Right Inc

strengths

(overseas) 1. Cheaper(facts)

All-Fabric Inc (Midwestern) Located in the Midwest too(facts)

2. Chew-proof (touted by the

weaknesses

company) 1. Pay workers nothing and

1. Quality and manufacturing

terrible working conditions

process are less than desirable

(from what Nasira could tell)

(facts) 2. Environmental pollution leads

2. Almost information on

to disputes (reports)

environmental impact and something is being hidden

3. Would be a chewing hazard

for dogs (Nasira’s concern) (Nasira’s suspicions) As we can see from the table, Fab-Right Inc (overseas company) does not look good but most of the negative information comes from Nasira's suspicions, which means no actual evidence. On the other hand, All-Fabric Inc (Midwestern)’s negative information source is much more credible. Also, as a procurement specialist, I think Nasira should be responsible for the quality of the products, so quality should be the most important factor to be considered. After evaluating the options, my solution is to choose the overseas company Fab-Right Inc as to the fabric supplier, at the same time, investigate this company to clarify Nasira’s suspicions. There are two reasons: First, this solution got Nasira’s the job done and saved her from layoffs. Second, based on the analysis of critical thinking, whether Fab-Right Inc is a sweatshop is uncertain. Therefore, I think this solution is proper.
