Case Study: Babcock Place The situation being faced is whether to open a crosswalk for the safety of senior citizens, so they can safely cross a four-lane avenue leading downtown. Or if they keep the avenue open and without a crosswalk and crosswalk light that would delay traffic. This was also said could create a false sense of safety for these senior citizens as a crosswalk would deter safe traffic flow. This could also create a safety issue for those driving on the road by delaying traffic flow and also putting these senior citizens at risk of being hit by a vehicle. The big issue for city council is not only making sure that the senior citizens are safe but also making sure that all drivers are safe as well. I believe that in the downtown area there is no way to put a crosswalk going across the main avenue going downtown. With this said I would vote No on the proposal introduced by Babcock place residents. But I would write other suggestions for these residents saying that we will find another place for them to safely cross the street if possible (Another place for a crosswalk). If this was still not possible I would try and make sure that public transit stops close to the Babcock place residence, so they can still safely go to where they need to go. I believe the best choice between the two alternatives that I mentioned is making sure that public transit has a stop close to the residence. This would make it to wear these citizens can not only go safely across the street to the library, shopping, etc. But this would also give these citizens a safe ride throughout town. The problem that I saw with putting a crosswalk nearby is that it would still delay traffic in the downtown area. Which as said earlier could create a false sense of safety for these senior citizens....
