GoBe: Place 1. Where did you go and why did you select this place? I selected the Answer Center. I selected this place because as the name suggests, they have most of the answers when it comes to college outside of the classroom. There are people to there to help you with almost anything you could need. It was also a very convenient location that worked with my busy schedule. 2. What other “place” did you consider? Of the vast variety of locations and departments offering different varied services and fields of expertise, I also considered going to the Baycare clinic, the Advising Center and the library. 3. What are the key services provided at the place you visited? The Answer Center offers a wide variety of services designed to make college life very simple even though many may still find it difficult to handle. Some of the key services would be; academic advising, financial aid assisting, graduation information, and admissions. Just a few of many different services offered. 4. Who did you interact with? During my visit to the Answer Center I met with Mia Cancaravic an Answer Center/Academic Advisor. She is from Bosnia and I was lucky enough to chat with her about her background. 5. Ask about the person’s education and career history. Mia told me that her educational background included an Undergrad Art History Degree from UF and then she got her Masters in Art History from Bosnia University. She then described her career background involving her work in the academic libraries for both UF and Bosnia University. She also told me about her time working for Harvard Peabody Museum. She currently works here at Valencia West in the Answer Center as a Answer Center/Academic Advisor. 6. What advice might this person have on how to be successful as a student? Mia told me jokingly but yet seriously that the most productive thing you can do is just pass your classes. However, she also said that it is important to know your career and build your resume and experience so that after you finish you will already have some experience and hopefully a career lined up.

Prompt 1: When starting college, what services were you surprised to learn were offered to students? What “on campus” services have you utilized since you’ve been a student at Valencia? What services do you wish were available but are not? When I first started at Valencia I was surprised to learn about the BayCare service about the support they offer for both physical and psychological issues. I was also surprised to see a cafeteria in a college. That is just unusual for me to see. I was also amazed to see the vast amount of skill workshops for both academic and personal topics. As far as “on campus” services, I have utilized the book store, Math Lab, Answer Center, Advising Center, library and the Security Center. One thing I do wish that Valencia had (although not really a service, but a useful addition) solar paneled covered parking lots. I really wish that Valencia had a stress center. It would be great for really stressed out students to go to and it would have a gaming center, dog and cat interaction center (which would go great with a veterinarian program if we had one), a series sleep pods that utilize a mixture of serene sounds and fragrant oxygen system integrated into the pods. Prompt 2: Did you feel welcomed when you first came to Valencia? Do you now feel a sense of community here? Are you comfortable here? Do you feel like you “belong”? When I first came to Valencia, I am not going to lie, I was a little nervous about the people I was going to be interacting with. The staff were helpful and polite however I did have to go through several hoops (so to speak) to finally get classes started. I do feel a sense of community here, everyone seems to trust each other and everyone is usually willing to help each other out. I feel better here than I did in High School. I am comfortable here now, it is challenging with my hectic and full schedule however with many of the classes offering different time periods for classes I was able to make it work and I now have friends in each of my classes. Five weeks into classes, I finally feel good about what I am doing. The past few years being out of school working like crazy to support my family has been incredibly hectic and difficult. Now that I am in classes again, I feel like nothing can stop me from getting what and where I want to be....
