Mini-Case Study: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

One of the fundamental or important things to consider when you want to make a good decision is critical thinking. “Critical thinking is clear, reasonable, reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do” (Lumen Learning, n.d.). Thinking is an inborn thing that we all possess, we can all think but what matters or what will determine how well someone thought about something would be the end result. The strategy that I will employ is called Text coding. A texting coding strategy is a tool that is used to track someone’s thinking while reading. In this case, I will read through the case study titled “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”, highlight and note the key points, facts, and problems. Find below the summary of the case study titled “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”: Nasira, a 25 years old lady, a graduate with less than a year from school, was working as a procurement specialist at K9 Dura-Corp. Being a procurement specialist, her job was to source the parts. Sourcing parts were more challenging for Nasira as some parts were difficult to find. Nasira’s part soucing was also important to the company because the sustainability of the company was dependent on it. K9 Dura-Corp, also known as K9DC, was a small but growing firm that was specialized in pet supplies like dog beds, cat scratching posts, and pet carriers, among other items. These products they supplied were sourced as parts by Nasira from different manufacturers. These parts when sourced, they were put together or assembled at their Michigan company, a company that relied heavily on “Made in America” marketing for its products.

One certain week, Nasira was forced to find a new source of the fabric lining for their dog cots due to the old manufacturer going out of business. As she researched, she found two suppliers one based locally in the Midwest and the other one based overseas. The overseas company was called Fabric Inc and the locally located was called All-Fabric Inc. According to Nasira, both companies had issues of their own but, they all had issues of environmental impact assessment. Although Fabric-Right Inc fabric was cheaper and touted as chew-proof, significant concerns about the labor used and environmental impact assessment were observed. On the other hand, All-Fabric Inc fabric was not durable as observed from the sample the company sent to her. Reports also showed that All-Fabric Inc was contaminating the local water resources and local residents were trying to get the government to intervene over the issue. For all the above reasons, Nasira decided not to choose any of the companies and decided to continue searching for the right company that would meet both the durability of the product and also passes the environmental impact assessment. Nasira’s company was at risk of laying off workers if the sourcing of parts was to be delayed as they were operating at an incredibly thin margin. Most of the jobs were at risk including Nasira as she was a new member with only less than six (6) months at the company. In my own opinion, Nasira was inexperienced in dealing with the job she was handed especially as a full specialist procurement. The company would have assigned or given Nasira someone senior to guide her on how to deliver such sensitive tasks on time. On Fabric-Right Inc, I think Nasira would have done much better than she did in finding out about the reasons that led her not to choose it.

The reasoning of Nasira was dependant on what she could see not on the facts, she should have asked or investigated why the information about the environmental impact assessment was almost not there. And from her reasoning here, some information was available just not enough which for again might have given her a signal to go a step farther. Nasira might have underrated how important her job in the company was. She did not critically think about the repercussion if she did not find the part manufacture in time. Nasira’s supervisor was also at fault, the supervisor must have briefed Nasira on the importance of the task she was about to undertake that week. For All-Fabric Inc, Nasira did a good job as she used the facts on the grounds to make a decision of not choosing it to supply them with fabric which was in terms of environmental impact. In terms of durability also, her judgment was spot on as it was based on what she observed from what the company sent as sample material to her. References: Bjorke, S. A. (2016).
