Summary

An essay on Jacques Ellul...

Description

Jacques Ellul Born on the 6th of January 1912, in Bordeaux, France, is a French political and social scientist, philosopher of technology and a protestant theologian. He was best known for many pieces that he wrote, especially his masterpiece La Technique: ou, L’enjeu du siècle (1954: The Technology Society). (Encyclopedia Britannica, n.d).

The Tech of Society In his book Propaganda, Jacques in bold terms tells how the logic of technology innovativeness has conquered every features of human culture. He criticized the level and the extent of technology in our daily lives, using that to press on how technology has taken over, dominating, virtually consecrated forces in our lives and our world, extending to every region and every corner of our lives. Jacques also warns of the ways technology carries various set values which especially when it’s unintentional or ignore, it imposes the values of our lives and relationship in ways which human rights are violated (Hill, 2012). To me, Jacques did not consider technology as a natural evil; instead he recognized that it is a self-reinforcing force that established on its own terms.

Propaganda: The Formation of Men’s Attitude After carefully going through the given article, I came to understand that the theme of propaganda perfectly relies on technology that when it encloses any society or culture, always results to propaganda. Jacques states that the average citizen may want to share his or her opinion of domestic and foreign issues but in reality he or she lacks the opportunity to do so. He is surrounded and snatched by propagandas because he is caught between his willingness and inability, which he refuses to accept (Ellul, 1965). The most approving moment to grasp him is when he is alone in the mass media; it is at this point that propaganda can be most fruitful.
