From HSC AG 3: Work Experience Placement Plan

What will be expected of me during my work experience placement? Responsibilities

When working in health and social care you need to be respectful because it helps others feel safe and to express themselves to you. You also need to make sure you are treating everyone equally is a human right and it allows everyone to feel safe no matter what someone's individual circumstance they should be treated with respect, dignity, and kindness. Also respecting other people’s dignity so they feel safe and valued and not judged. Respecting confidentiality is a massive thing in health and social care as it builds trust between employee and employer. Also acting professionally because it promotes patient safety and makes employers trust you. Skills

When working in health and social care you need to have excellent communication skills. You can develop these through listening and trying to be understanding to others. You also need to have good organisation skills as it's an important ability when in a workplace organisation skills help you meet deadlines and stay focused and help you and others do the job well. When working with others in the health and social care sector you need to make sure you have good teamwork skills as this allows you to build a connection with your employees and allows you to make sure the person you are caring for receives the best treatment they can get. When working in care there will be many problems you face daily, however you need to make sure you solve these problems in an efficient and professional way, it also helps the employer to see you have many other competencies such as logic, creativity and resilience.

Attitudes and behavior

When working in a health and social care sector you must make sure you have a positive attitude as it will help you cope more easily with daily problems, a negative attitude will influence the people around you as your mood can affect others. If you're in a negative mood when working you are more likely to make more mistakes according to (www.talemed.com). When you are working in the healthcare environment you need to behave in a professional way as you are responsible for other people's lives, injuries and needs and your priority is your patient's safety.

What can I do now? I am very mature as I have seen inside of health and social sectors, and I also have an understanding of what it is like there, and I have an understanding of what is expected. I also am good at respecting people's dignity, as I would never want anyone to be embarrassed or ashamed because of me because I would never want to be in that position myself, for example if you’re a midwife and a woman is giving birth try to cover her up as much as possible so only you and whoever needs to see her can, this way she won't feel embarrassed or ashamed when giving birth.

What areas do I plan to develop while on placement? While on my placement I plan on developing my skills, I would like to improve my selfconfidence as I struggle with it. To improve it I need to prove to myself I can achieve the things I want to achieve. I will make sure when I am working my absolute hardest when in my placement to achieve my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. I would also like to develop my attribute of patience as that is one thing, I am not so good at I will need to improve this as when I'm working in healthcare I will need to be patient with the people I care for as they could be going through a tough time or my team as they might be a bit slower at doing a job than I would like them to be however I would need to remember that everyone is trying their best and I need to be patient.

How will my work experience placement support:

The development of my professional skills? During my work experience placement, I will be able to develop my professional skills as I will be able to observe employees who are doing their jobs, I will then be able to learn new skills. I will witness what it's like to work in a health and social care sector.

The development of my personal attributes? Working in health and social care will help me develop my personal attributes. Work experience will help me to learn new skills and attributes and allow me experience situations in health and social care which will help my attributes develop for example someone who's grieving the loss of a family member/friend I will attempt to put myself in their shoes and empathise with them to imagine if I was in that person's shoes how I would act ,then I will be able to feel their emotions and I can relate to them better therefore can try and help them the best that I can through grieving.

Preparation for employment? Work experience gives me an idea of what it is like to work in the health and social care sector. It will allow me to put theory into practice and allow me to practice all the skills and knowledge I have learnt in college also to learn knew knowledge as I will be witnessing what working in health and social care is like. It also slows me to learn and develop different skills for when I work in the care environment and allows me to get an idea of what's involved. The placement will give me the chance to decide if the career choice I've chosen is what I want to do in the future.

My understanding of the health and social care sector? It will give me an understanding of what is expected of me when working in health and social care in both clinical and non-clinical areas. It can help you find out more about the skills needed for the wide range of roles in the healthcare environment It will give you an understanding of the emotional and physical aspects of working in health and social care, it will provide ideas to start your future career. It will also give you an idea of the skills you need to thrive in your workplace and also how you can improve the skills you already have.

What are my goals while on work placement?

Goal 1 Develop better teamwork skills

To meet this goal, I will build trust with my team as while working together we will need to trust each other. If any of my team would like help while completing a job, I will try my hardest to help them get the job completed efficiently.

Goal 2 Develop better communication skills

To meet this goal, I will make sure I communicate with my team if I am struggling on anything. I will practice active listening, so I will be able to learn from others and learn to listen to what others are saying. I will also empathise with others and place myself in their shoes therefore I can understand their emotions and try build relationships with the people I am caring for.

Goal 3

Develop better Time management

To meet this goal, I will need to I will time periods for each of the things I have to do during the day to ensure I am keeping on time for everything, and I will practice this over and over to make sure I am organized for my placement. I will start my tasks early to allow me enough time to complete them all throughout the day. I will make sure I have breaks throughout the day to ensure I don’t over-do myself, therefore I'm not tired for the next day, therefore I can start each day positively.

How will this plan support my understanding of what will be expected of me while on placement?

This plan will support my understanding of what will be expected of me while on placement as it will allow me to observe the people around me and take in new knowledge and skills. I will see the challenging times inside of the health and social care sector and learn overtime how to deal with them in a professional way learning new skills and attributes overtime. The plan will allow me to have an idea of what is expected of me from the employers and what I will need to carry out before I enter my placement. Researching your work placement will allow you to decide if it is the career for you and which jobs to apply for once you’ve finished your training. Providing yourself with as much information about your placement will give you a clearer idea of what to expect during your time there. According to Billingham et al 2016 work experience will allow me to develop new skills that I wouldn’t have got when working in a classroom.
