Description

For my 3 pieces, I chose an the AuroraMAX observatory site showing the northern lights, a blog style guide on where to find the lights and what to do, and lastly page from the Northern Lights Centre on the history of the lights. All of above sites are educational and can be easily found with a quick search online. In terms of accessibility, all sites are in English with no option to change site languages. However, one site is specific to those with disabilities who wish to see the northern lights. This page highlights services and tours that are equipped with the knowledge and facilities for a wheelchair user to safely enjoy a tour of the northern lights. I think informational sites like this that make it easier for more people to enjoy nature are important additions to sites that do not already have this information. I found that all 3 sites geared their information towards an audience of travellers, by providing information on things to do, where to go, and the best times to catch the northern lights. Their aim was towards people who had the finances and ability to travel to see the northern lights. There were less resources easily available with the history of northern lights and more so on vacation planning. I enjoyed that I found one site with a more “historical” approach among the many travel guides. The Northern Lights Centre provided a lot of information on the causes of northern lights, what the northern lights are, and some old legends about the lights. I think it was organized well and allowed the audience to learn about the significance of the lights. When it comes to nature interpretation, I think that being aware of the history of nature is extremely important as it pushes us to conserve the world which we live in so that we do not lose these gifs of nature. Nature interpretation through Beck et al. (2018), should “provide uplift and encourage preservation” which is that the Northern Lights Centre is working towards. I think that as a form of nature interpretation, the AuroraMax observatory showing a live stream of the northern lights “works” best. It allows us to be able to experience what the northern lights look like and how it moves without actually having to travel there. I also liked that this live model showed the beauty of the lights across a 180 degree field of view so we can see more than what a single photo would provide. Beck et al. (2018) states that “taking a picture is capturing a snapshot in time”, so what would a live stream be? I think that being able to look back on these livestreams provided by the AuroraMAX observatory is incredible. The reason I think this “works” the most is because this type of nature interpretation makes the audience excited and ready to go out and seek more information for themselves. This is when they would come across the other 2 sites on the history of the northern lights and what to do during their trip. References: Accessible northern lights holidays.
