Description

Job postings often state that the successful applicant must have superior critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Yet employers tell college administrators that graduates, both from undergraduate and graduate programs, often lack these skills. 1. 2.

Having read this week's assigned materials, how would you define critical thinking? Why are employers making these comments? Are they justified – should colleges be responsible for teaching critical thinking? If not, whose job is it?

Your Discussion should be at least 250 words in length, but not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references for the textbook and any other sources used; you should use at least 1 APA citation and reference, but you can use more if needed. Refer to the UoPeople APA Tutorials in the LRC for help with APA citations.

Hello everyone, After reading this week reading material and watching the TED videos, I’m happy to have the opportunity of applying my critical thinking in order to define what critical thinking is. Critical thinking by definition: “Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness”.(Michael, S & Richard ,P,1987) As mentioned in the quote below, Critical thinking includes many facts and would l define it critical by the ability to think logically regarding a specific problem and find a valuable solution. It is being able to think in a rationale manner, organized in order to find the connections between presented facts and ideas, complicated, or simple and some people will also defined it as the process of thinking about the way we think. To think critically means to challenge ourselves and think sometime “out of the box”. Critical thinking is presented as a skill that one need to develop or master, but there’s many stages or learning progress that will help through the process: observation, analyze, interpretation, self-reflection, evaluate, find explanation, problem solving and taking action. Critical thinking is one of the foundation which we can self-development as an employee, it can help us in the job seeking and vital for self-progression.

2. Employers nowadays claiming that University graduates are lacking critical-thinking and problem solving skills, In 2010, the Satisfaction Survey conducted in over 900 employers around US- “employers gave students very low grades on nearly all of the 17 learning outcomes explored in the study”—including critical thinking—and that students “judge themselves to be far better prepared for post-college success than do employers.”(Jenkins, 2017) According to Jenkins,2017 graduate students graded themselves significantly higher with level of critical skills and problem solving when the employers ranked them lower while critical thinking is a fundamental skill required by employers in order to perform a job, whether manual work or office position. In our days, it is correct to say that Universities teaches some level of critical thinking, but is for the graduates to apply critical thinking/ problem-solving skills in various Employers expecting from graduates student to apply critical thinking as part of their problem solving process, to be innovative and developed new ideas, employers are bound to ‘complain’ as they seek assurance, development and originality from their employees. Therefore, we can realize that the employer’s comments are justified and we can expect college students to own the progress of critical thinking improvement, but we cannot force professors to fix that issue, if a student lack with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, there’s ways to improve and upscale our level.

The employers are mostly justified to make comments of poor critical-thinking and problemsolving skills possessed by recent graduates since critical thinking is the cornerstone of selfdevelopment, and essential in today’s job market, whilst, problem solving is the source of all new inventions, social and cultural evolution, and the basis for market based economies. However, the last fact mentioned in the discussion suggests otherwise
