Unit 4: Practice Critical Thinking Skills

Written Assignment Unit 4 University of the People UNIV 1001: Online Education Strategies Instructor Title. Dr Sean Warman July 09, 2021

2 Unit 4: Practice Critical Thinking Skills 1. A summary of the issues. Nasira is employed as a Procurement Specialist for K9 Dura-Corp who is a manufacturer of pet supplies in Michigan, the company relies heavily on “Made in America” marketing for its products. However in reality they only assessable their products locally and import parts from mostly overseas. Nasira’s job to source these parts. Nasira is working to find a new source for the fabric lining for their dog cots. Their old manufacturer has gone out of business, there is a risk of manufacturing delays if she didn’t find a new source immediately. She feels her job could be at stake if she can’t resolve this issue quickly. Nasira has found two sources for the style they needed. One supplier was is located in the Midwest too, while the other was overseas. Fab-Right Inc is an overseas manufacture, they are cheaper, and claim chew-proof fabric, but there are concerns about the labour used to manufacture it and no information on the environmental impacts of their products. All-Fabric Inc. is the local Midwestern supplier, has potential problems too. The fabric may be less durable and could be a chewing hazard for dogs, there are also environmental concerns with the manufacturing process.

2.

Analyze the situation and highlight key facts

We know that neither option is ideal, so in the long term Nasira should continue looking for an alternative supplier, but because we are under time pressure and we only have these two options to work with I have deduced to us a Persuasion map. (A Hamilton et al., 2018) This is essentially

3 a pro’s and con’s diagram so we can decide overall which company is going to be the better option for now. Which supplier is going to be the best short term option for the fabric lining for dog cots. Fab-Right Inc. Pro’s ● Environmental Concerns without local impact ● Cheaper ● Crew Proof

Con’s ● Overseas Based ● Labor Concerns ● Environmental Concerns (Unverified)

All-Fabric Inc. Pro’s

Con’s

● Local

● Environmental Concerns with local impact (Confirmed) ● More expensive ● Not crew proof, harmful to dogs

3. My Recommendation to Resolve The Situation Based on the above diagram Fab Right Inc. is the better option overall. The environmental concerns are not verified as Nasira could not locate information and even if they do prove to be true they are less likely to affect K9 Dura-Corp’s reputation as much because it will not affect their customers directly. I would recommend that Nasira produce a supply agreement with Fab Right Inc. and try to negotiate that K9 Dura-Corp pays more for the product in exchange that extra money is used to provide better working conditions to their employees. She could also request that they provide an environmental impacts statement, this way if there are issues found these can be worked into a future supplier contract. If these proposals are rejected K9 Dura-Corp can use Fab Right Inc. to address their immediate supply problem and continue to locate a new supplier that will not pose such a risk to K9 Dura-Corp’s reputation.
