Written Assignment: Unit 2: Peer Assessment What is Peer Assessment and why do we use it at University of the People? Peer Assessment is making Assessments and giving commentaries on fellow student’s work based on the topic at hand. It is learning through engagement (Connely & Clandinin, 1990). It also helps students apply what they are learning by assessing another peers work either through written assignments like this one or discussion forums available in Moodle. The University of the People uses this model in order to give students different perspectives and ideas while allowing each student’s skills be sharpened as they assess each other. The University of the People understand that this platform helps students go an extra mile, prompting them to read the materials provided and research to give positive feedback. What are the benefits of peer assessment? Below are some benefits of Peer Assessing that I found:  It improves the learning experience of each student that positively participates in grading another peers work.  It helps students effectively internalize academic standards and assessment criteria “Race, brown & Smith, 2005 – University of readers”  It also encourages students to take a much greater responsibility for their growth by encouraging engagement with assessment criteria and reflection of their own performance. What are the challenges of giving peer assessment feedback? Below are some points I found on the challenges of giving peer assessment:  The concern that some peers may not have read up on the topic at hand in order to grade you fairly  Some students may be too generous in their gradings What are some of the Challenges of receiving peer feedback in peer assessment? One challenge can be that some peers may be too critical in their approach. It is important to be accurate in your assessing, but being over critical can affect somebody else ‘grade. This can also be a reason for one’s self esteem to drop. I think another challenge comes in when the peer doing the assessing does not look at the content from different perspectives or try to go into the writer’s mind. When you view something one way, it’s difficult to see the beauties around it. What strategies will you use to peer assess written assignments? I think the approach I will use will be to ask myself questions like, what was his/her thinking at the time? What ways did they look for a solution? And so on, try to enter into the writer’s mind. I plan to assess my peers based on the knowledge I have on that topic and make sure I have read all materials necessary to give a fair grade.

How will you assess discussion assignments? I will firstly base it on whether or not my fellow classmate has read and followed the rules on posting discussions. Is the word count more or less? Was the post based on the topic at hand or did they start mentioning things not pertaining to the topic at all? Look at grammar used and references used if necessary.
