Description

Works Cited Adler, Ronald B. (Ronald Brian), 1946-. Interplay : The Process of Interpersonal Communication. New York :Oxford University Press, 2013. Pg 144 & 150-151 What two principles about verbal communication are represented in the “VEEP” clip? The two principles that I believe the “VEEP” clip represented are disclaimer, and euphemism. In the “VEEP” clip at 1:55 a woman approaches Madame Vice President and says, “No disrespect meant over here, it’s the title. It is a little confusing”. Madame Vice President responds, “no it isn't” then looks to her assistant Richard and says, “could you deal with this” Richard interrupts and replies, "sure” and then the Vice President continues with “wonderfully honest woman”. Within that clip it shows both disclaimer, and euphemism and here's how... In Interplay pg. 144 disclaimer is defined as: “a type of powerless speech that attempts to distance the speaker from remarks that might be unwelcome.”. This is a perfect example because, when the lady started by saying “no disrespect”, she led with that because what she was going to say could be taken as disrespectful. The Vice President I believe took it as a disrespectful comment, because she responded in an aggressive/defensive way by saying “no it isn't”. Again, also within that same clip we see euphemism being represented as well. In Interplay pg. 150-151 euphemism is defined as: “it avoids direct, literal reference to an event, substituting terms describing its consequences, related events, metaphors, or other more abstract associations. Typically used to soften the impact of information that might be unpleasant, both for oneself as well as for the other person.”. When the Vice president asked Richard if he could deal with “this wonderfully honest woman”. The Vice President was softening the impact, she is the Vise President she can't say things like “alright Richard get her out of my face” or even telling the woman that she needs to leave, or that she's a liar, or even something worse. She remained respectful and showed the verbal communication of euphemism....
