Description

ATI case study: levels of prevention, virtual 6 (information the provider communicated to the nurse) Courtney smith: 10 year old, cystic fibrosis, developed a cough about 3 wks. ago, mom took her to clinic where provider obtained family health history performed a swept chloride test and the results show positive, doctor is Catherine nelson, The referral is to Educate the family on cystic fibrosis, nurse says she will start to prepare for the assignment What level of prevention is depicted in the video and why? Tertiary prevention is the level of prevention depicted in the video because the nurse was assigned by the provider, to educate the family on their child’s disease that she already had, prior to being admitted for the persistent cough that was developed around three weeks prior to the current date of admission. Tertiary prevention aims at improving the symptoms, and/or the quality of life of the individual that already has a disease. An intervention the nurse would implement during tertiary intervention when caring for this client would be, education. Family education on the existing disease is the intervention the healthcare provider assigned to the nurse as well. Tertiary care does require a higher/specialized knowledge, as well as constant health monitoring. Education for the family of the child with the illness, is the best fitted implementation. I did not select the appropriate level of prevention for the client. (after watching the second video that indicates the level of prevention and why, I realize I chose the incorrect level unfortunately) I will need to thoroughly analyze the specific differences of each three levels of prevention. Nurses are actively involved in secondary strategies within healthcare, communities and even schools, this is also elements of secondary

prevention that I wasn’t quite clear on. My strengths were note taking all of the information the healthcare provider passed on to the nurse in order to educate the family of the patient. What are the levels of prevention for health? Prevention is primarily categorized as Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. The goals of prevention therapy are to promote wellness, aid in clients achieving optimal health, and maintain that health status once it has been reached. Provide an example of each of the levels when considering pneumonia. PRIMARY: immunizations are a form of primary prevention; one vaccine of importance would be a yearly flu shot. Flu is linked to commonly being the initial cause of pneumonia. SECONDARY: Assessing the patient as early as possible for illness/disease (in this case, we would assess for pneumonia), before it gets worse than it would if it was caught in the incubation stage vs the prodromal or illness stages. TERTIARY: providing comfort care for individuals who already have a pneumonia, essentially, managing the pneumonia to either weaken it virulence or stop it all together.

Provide an intervention at each level that you could implement for pneumonia (feel free to google to assist writing this section).

The flu is a common cause of pneumonia, so preventing the flu is a good way to prevent pneumonia immunizations are a form of primary prevention. Patient education! Willingness to learn by the patients give the healthcare provider the ability to offer resource that are available if applicable to the patient. The client needs early treatment when a problem with the pneumonia reveals itself, so it is important to verbalize to the patient that going to an urgent care, primary care provider, or the emergency room, when they’re experience symptoms of this illness. Educate patient on medicine therapy if they’ve ben prescribed medications for pneumonia, once that has been retained, always encouraging the patient to not become completely sedentary as a lifestyle due to this ailment. The goal of this level overall is rehabilitation. Healthcare providers will work in conjunction to assist with the reaching of the ultimate goal.

Virtual Clinical Day Assignments:

Entry Date: 04/21/2021

Description of the Clinical Experience

This virtual assignment was more difficult for me than others, but the reasoning behind that is reliant to something I did wrong, which was mixing up the dates and submissions between in person clinical days and the virtual assignments, that are assigned for virtual clinical days. The reason why this was impactful, was because I attempted to complete this assignment prior to being taught it during lecture in class. I grew so frustrated trying to understand the concepts comprising the levels of prevention, whereas, if I would have done the assignments in order, I would have the knowledge I needed to complete this assignment more efficiently. Reflection

I think I did as well as I could with the information I had. I was able to use the process of elimination to rule out the primary level of prevention as being the correct level displayed by the nurse in the ATI video case study. However, I ultimately chose the wrong level. I was able to make sense of the differences between the primary and secondary levels once I went to our very next lecture class.

Influencing Factors I feel mistakes were made on my behalf due to lack of clarity within the information provided to me for the ample levels of prevention. I performed my own research within ati in attempts to make sense of it all, but I still failed at assessing the level portrayed to me. I felt like this was avoidable, if I wouldn’t have made the original mistake of mixing up the dates, I would have had the tools I vitally needed to correctly decided on which level I was being shown.

Evaluation - Alternative strategies

As our course term is coming to an end, the improvements I plan to make would consist of following the syllabus and blackboard dates more vigilantly, than I have during this course. If I would have paid closer attention, I would have been organized enough to where I was able to stay on track with each component of the course as a whole.

Learning

As a whole this assignment taught me the importance of following a timeline for assignments when one is provided. I did not have clarity on the differentiation of these

levels until my instructor verbally analyzed and gave examples of each level, during her lecture class. Outside of that, I wasn’t aware that the flu is a common cause of pneumonia, until this assignment. I always had the impression that pneumonia was its own thing and didn’t stem from a previous or underlying illness. This is knowledge that has the potential to be very useful as a nursing student, and future registered nurse....
