Week 1 Assignment: Noise Interference with Interpersonal Communication Rayshaunda Bowman COM200: Interpersonal Communication Tamika Johnson November 9, 2021

This week's assignment is on the video "A Failure to Communicate." This video shows several forms of miscommunication between two women. In the video were two women standing at a train station. One woman was wearing a Niqab covering her whole body except her eyes while looking at the train's routes while the other woman was doing something at a machine. The lady wearing the Niqab was trying to ask the other women for help, and the lady was not responding. The reason she was not responding was that she was deaf. The lady wearing the Niqab became upset when the lady did not respond right away. The deaf women finally respond with a machine that talks for her. This video showed a few communication barriers. At the beginning of the video, there is no noise interference, but as the video continues, you see how noise affects the two women from communicating.

There were many instances of miscommunication that I noticed in the video. One incident was the woman wearing the Niqab became upset when she thought the other woman was ignoring her, but she was not ignoring her. She could not understand her because she was deaf. When the Niqab woman did not respond to the other women, she could have stepped back and examined the situation. She could have made sure the women heard her or even spoke the same language. She did not know if something was preventing the woman from hearing or understanding her. In this situation, the principle that could have occurred to communicate effectively was "Acknowledge that your view of a situation is only one of many views." Another incident is respecting others as well as yourself. (Brevan 2020, section 1.4). The Niqab women did not respect the deaf woman for her disability, but the other women respected her for covering her head to toes except her eyes.

Noise is presented daily by messages and sensations from signs, advertisements, and stranger interaction (Bevon 2020, section 1.2). Four types of noise can determine how a person receives a message. Physical noise was displayed in the video when the women were communicating with one another. There was a sound of a train going by, and then someone on an intercom preventing the woman from getting her message across. Psychological noise exhibited when the woman wearing the Niqab began to shoe rage when she could not use the machine to communicate. Physiological noise occurred when the deaf women could not talk, and the women wearing the Niqab lips were not showing to read her lips. The last noise is Semantic noise, and this occurred in the video when the deaf woman pulled out her machine that talks for her.

Effective communication is essential in professional and personal life. It determines what kind of conversation you will have. There are many ways communication can be misinterpreted by noise and different distractions. It is up to you to communicate in a way that others can understand. Getting clarification and understanding can lead to a better understanding of one another (Bevon 2020).
