Description

Professor and Classmates, Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment was an insightful instrument to use. It demonstrated scores for perception of the ability of one’s leadership skills. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017) Upon completion of my assessment, I discovered that I have an excellent perfection of what is encompassed of a good leader. The strengths that were highlighted in the assessment were my communication skills and teamwork skills. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017) I was not surprised by this as my first bachelor’s degree was in communications. I enjoyed learning about myself during this assessment, and think it built confidence that I would make a good leader one day. Our fellow classmates and coworkers will be the ones in leadership roles in the future, thus redefining leadership. Advanced education, which we all are acquiring, is essential to be a leader of tomorrow. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017) Grossman and Valiga encourages us to incorporate a new perspective of leadership and become accustomed to “chaos and disequilibrium. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017, p. 40) In addition, we must become flexible and adapt to the ever-changing healthcare environment. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017, p. 41) Lastly, we must all collaborate, creating improving health policy, communication amongst the healthcare team, and have increased quality improvement. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017) All of us are playing a crucial role in shaping the healthcare system of tomorrow. The theories mentioned in chapter two can help in the development of new nurses in a leadership role through many ways. For example, transformative leadership and identification of design instances and definition of nursing-specific characteristics. Transformation leadership's directly impacts on the hospital culture. (Fischer, 2016) The theory is a collection of teachable skills, that can be taught to new nurses to help foster leadership abilities (Fischer, 2016). In a study, transformative leadership was taught nurses how to communicate, associate, sanction, delegate, initiate, and achieve external legitimacy. (DeSimone, 2006) Through teaching these skills to new nurses, it is possible to help develop their leadership skills. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017) References DeSimone, B. B. (2006).
