Gen Mus 175 Week 7 Listening Journal Yongjun Park After watching the two videos of Riverdance, I was fascinated by the group dance and impressed with its long history and popularity. From the first video about the 25th anniversary of Riverdance, I realized that the globalization of such famous Irish performance helps strengthening Irish identity all over the world. Also, I liked the transition from calm and peaceful singing parts to the traditional Irish dance solo part. Furthermore, the characteristic of Irish dance and music stands out more as the tempo of the music gets faster and group of dancers join the stage. My most favorite part was at 5:47, when all the dancers begin to perform the step dance. Lord of the Dance is also composed of the similar transition in the step dance performance, where the show begins with dance movements with medium tempo music and it turns into group step dances with faster tempo. I was also impressed with Eimear Quinn’s performance. Her vocal solo with mix of contemporary and Irish instruments give listeners a dreamlike feeling. Although the song is relatively slow and calm, it really captured the audience with Eimear Quinn’s unique voice. Also, Nocturne by Secret Garden is another great example of the impressive performance of vocal solo with the matchless performance of both violin and Irish instruments. This performance also did a successful job in terms of introducing Norway music to the world music market. I Am the Lord of the Dance Said He by The Dubliners provides a lively feeling of joy and an Irish pub-like atmosphere. It also sounds very similar to some of the Irish jig musics and tells us that what traditional Irish music supposed to sound like. Maintaining the Irish roots and its original style while gratifying the taste of global audiences is very challenging, however, it seems like Irish musics did a tremendous job introducing their music and identity and settling in to the world music market....
