Description

What does Faustus last soliloquy tell us about Faustus? Does it reveal change in Faustus's ? attitude from his first soliloquy

Dr Faustus play was written during the renaissance era. The play is a merge of a tragedy and a morality play because it shows the conflict between good and evil .It presents the temptation, downfall and damnation of Faustus although he mastered the traditional four faculties of studies and was considered a scholar. There's a change in the attitude towards . the last and the firs soliloquy of Dr. Faustus

In the first soliloquy, The audience are introduced to Faustus as a man of achievements, and a great scholar. A man of knowledge that posses great ambitions yet his enormous thirst never seems to end. His curiosity for supreme knowledge and power leads him to choose the path of magic. He believes that magic is the only way he is able to gain Godly powers. In act 1 scene 1,shows Faustus examining various fields such as theology ,medicine and etc to choose a particular one to specialize in but later comes to the conclusion that all fields seem useless and unsatisfactory and do not fill his desires hence why he turns to practice magic because he thinks he will be able to have Godly powers that is unlimited. He wants to be immortal, and surpass every human ability and so he chooses the path of the devil and practices black magic. He is shown troubled with thoughts and the conflict of his greed and conscience soul .He moves from a state of happiness to a state of misery due to his .temptations, pride and ambition

The last soliloquy, Faustus submitted himself to the devil and commits the most shameful sins which lead him to be damned in hell forever. He realizes the excessive knowledge he had is the cause for his downfall and so was his pride considered a sin that was responsible for his damnation. He is in a miserable condition where he is consumed with fear and agony as an hour is left and time is ticking before he is carried off to hell. His expression is horrific and he is desperate to escape from death by any means and starts to make illogical statements such as appealing to the planet to stop moving and calling upon the sun to rise in order to . prevent the coming of midnight Faustus wants the hour to prolong itself so he may have the time to repent although his time of redeeming has come to an end. Faustus realizes that time will not stop and the devil will come because his death is the only way to punish him for his sins. Overall Faustus realizes his mistake only when its late and comes to his senses and understands one .shouldn’t exceed their limitation of human ability

To conclude ,Both last and first soliloquy shows the fall of a knowledgeable scholar. His great pride and ambition contributed to his downfall which he realizes later when his time comes . to an end. In my opinion, Faustus's curiosity and greed led him to his downfall
