Who’s Your Favorite Youtuber? Let’s CHAT about that

Youtube, a place where people go to try and make a career for themselves. When people ask you, “What do you do for a living?” and you tell them that you make youtube videos, they could nod in silence or act they’re impressed. I am not a youtuber myself, but I have thought about becoming one. You get to upload whatever you want, whenever you want, have a bunch of subscribers and get paid. Couldn’t get better than that, right? Ever since youtube updated their tems it's hard to upload when you have to follow the guidelines or your videos won’t get approved and will be demonetized. They updated their platform because they wanted to make it a safe environment for both the viewers and the people who are uploading. Others would watch their favorite youtuber, like: Roman Atwood, Shane Dawson and Jenna Marbles. These are the OG youtubers. Their videos would get millions of views because what kind of content they would upload. People now who are just started making videos and content get their inspiration from the youtubers they watched growing up. While trying to put out good content and making their subscribers happy, a lot of people don’t know the struggles they go through. What really goes on behind the scenes.

Good Moooorning! To the best family on Youtube Every once in a while your favorite youtuber might make a video saying that they’re “Quitting youtube”, or they’re taking a break from making videos to focus on their own personal lives. I will be using CHAT (cultural-historical activity theory) to analyze what youtubers have to face, overcome and what made them successful throughout the years. I will also be looking the different genre conventions that goes into making a youtube video. Let’s start off

using a very popular youtuber, (or used to be) Yousef Erakat aka FouseyTube. Fouseytube started his channel back in 2011 by doing pranks and from there his channel grew in millions. I think Reception has worked itself into this because people were really enjoying his content that he was putting out. What he wanted was to get people’s live reactions so he could get good content. Reception is how others received the text, in this case the video. Seeing his videos and what he put out, viewers were really interested which made youtube a little more fascinating to watch. Socialization also fits into this context because when people saw his content he was making, they were liking, and sharing his videos. Socialization is how people distribute the text or how they dealt with it. He would upload pranks, social experiments and also vlog his daily life. He would get both hate and love for it because people thought he was doing just for views. Throughout the years, Fouseytube has build up his channel dramatically to the point where he had multiple channels. Having multiple channels put a great load of stress of Yousef to the point where he went off his meds. He had a history of depression, addiction and a bipolar disorder. As he was getting more and more fame, he stopped using his medications; he let the fame get in his head. When he did that, he went through all sorts of emotion that unfortunately put him into a manic episode. There were comments saying that he needed help, he needed to get back on his meds and that he is literally the definition of crazy. Yousef even made an event called “July 15th” and it was basically a concert where he gets small rappers and performers a chance to get on stage and perform. Sadly all that

went downhill when an incident happened. Months has passed and Yousef put out a video saying that he admitted he was off his meds and was in a manic episode. He regrets why he did that and will get better in the future. Now Yousef is back on his medications and is trying to live a healthy and care free life. He’s taking it slow and now has a girlfriend to help him stay on the right path.

Peace, on the street, Saaan Everybody has their favorite couple they watch on youtube. Whether it’s De’arra and Ken, Jess and Gabriel or Weylie, but a specific couple I will be talking about is Jesse and Jeana. Jesse and Jeana, aka BfvsGf, were a beloved couple when youtube was getting more popular. They would upload pranks they did with the public and with each other. The production of the pranks were the fun part. Production are the tools, practices and the thought process for a text. While making these pranks, they would use hidden camera’s, have actors to come and help with the prank and would do practice rounds before getting a live reaction from people or each other. Not everything can be put in a video, especially the inappropriate stuff. Like profanity, a naked child, and copyright. That’s why youtube has changed their guidelines and rules to make it seem sometimes not everything goes as planned. The may not get the reaction they wanted for people, the weather could be bad that day, or they weren’t allowed to film at a particular spot. Ecology is things that are not in our control. Whenever they would do a prank, they would have to stop and plan out that day, the weather and find a popular place where they can get live reactions. Soon, after their youtube channel has gain millions of followers over the years and started getting a fan based. They called their fans “peeps” because they would start off saying “What up peeps!” in their intros. Sadly in 2016 they announced their were breaking up to do constant arguments. They’ve told their fans that they were having trouble connecting and being honest with each

other in one of their videos. They said that what they put on camera isn’t the same behind camera. They broke the news to youtube, soon after it was all over the internet and people were devastated. Fans couldn’t believe that their favorite youtube couple was going end their relationship. A couple years later Jesse found a new girlfriend and he’s been living his life in california and Jeana is living her best life in Pennsylvania where they first started their youtube journey.

Like, Subscribe, Favorite… While most beloved youtube couples have their ups and downs and eventually breakup; one particular couple stayed together even through their rough times. A channel called “Kidbehindacamera” has been in the youtube game for some years and they’ve been killing it ever since. It started off with one person, Michael, who would upload videos of his dad raging out on him. After seeing videos of his dad and he made a second channel called “TheAngryGrandpaShow”, it was featuring his dad. On that channel, they did a bunch of different things. The Activity part of it was how they created the videos. Activity is defined as how people engage and create the text. They would do skits, pranks and reaction videos to gain views. For the skits, they would have scripts and actors to make the video look believable. While making videos, youtuber’s activity involves a lot of promoting and gaining views and subscribers. They have to make sure that all of their content is getting seen on popular social media platforms. One prank they did was called the “Walking Dead” prank and they had the neighborhood kids be in the video and act as zombies. After years of success, his video started to

get low in views. He wondered why, so he started doing these scripted series where he made up these stories just for views. His Uptake was not what he expected and views when down even more. Uptake is the process we go through to take up a new idea and think about it until it makes sense(ISU GWRJ). In other words, getting new ideas and trying to understand it. He had new ideas that he got from his previous videos, tried it, but it did not work because of the feedback he was getting. Soon after, he learned that not everyone is going to like what he puts out, and that’s when he realized he need to change his content. People were calling him out saying his videos were fake and he was only using people for views. As soon as that happened, his videos were getting demonetized and he now had to watch what he says in his videos. Now, he’s just uploading his daily life with his girlfriend and listening to what his viewers had to say instead of ignoring them.

And Remember, He loves you and remember to love each other I decided to switch it up and add and talk about a family youtuber. Family is everything when it comes to “Sam and Nia” family is their first priority. They are family vloggers who would vlog about parenting, there kids and their religion. They would distribute their content on instagram, facebook and a blog. Distribution is how they text is distributed and they would put out little clips from their vlogs to “promote” it in a way. Distributing their content on different platforms is the most common and quickest way youtuber’s do to let viewers watch their videos.

It could be in a ad, a poster, email etc. Their cute and loveable kids is what gain the views and subscribers on their videos. A couple years ago they’ve made a video about a miscarriage, after that their representation went down. Youtubers can represent themselves a lot of different ways. They can be represented funny, knowledgeable or a extrovert. People were figuring out that the video was fake and that they lied about the miscarriage. Apparently they did the video for views and they were getting so much hat from it. They were calling them liars and a fraud because the way they acted in that video. Representation is defined as how people think about and plan the text, what ideologies and framework. They are known for giving back, helping out the community and including christianity into their lives, but since that video, all of that was ruined. They took a break from youtube to re-collect themselves and let the controversy die down a bit. When it was time to come back, they changed up their style of vlogging, how much they put their kids on camera and how much of their privacy is shared. Today, they’re more mindful of what they put on their channel. Every now and then they would come on and talked about that’s going in their lives and how God had came and helped them through their problems they had to face.

Thanks for liking commenting and subscribing In the end, youtubers do have their ups and down. It takes time to show who they are and what they are about. We used CHAT to talk about their upcoming, their breakthroughs and

hardships and also how they turned out at the end. We also talked about the conventions of each term how it applies to youtube itself.
