Description

Work Authorization Information: If you are on an F-1 visa, you have the ability to work legally in the U.S., while on co-op, using Curricular Practical Training (CPT). CPT is a type of employment authorization that allows F-1 students to work in the U.S. while on co-op. Co-op employment must be related to the F-1 student’s major and provide practical training. CPT comes in two forms: (1) full-time and (2) part-time. According to the Steinbright Career Development Center, the definition of a fulltime co-op includes work that totals 32-40 hours per week. Part-time co-op includes work that equals 20 hours per week. There is a limit to the number of full-time CPT days available to an F-1 student, if s/he cares to remain eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT)*. The limit of full-time CPT days is 364, in order to remain eligible for OPT. Part-time CPT has no impact on eligibility for OPT. If an F-1 student is scheduled for three co-ops and desires to remain eligible for OPT, a maximum of two full-time co-ops can be performed in the U.S. and one co-op must be either part-time (for employment within the U.S.) or international (outside of the U.S.). Neither part-time CPT nor international co-ops impact eligibility for OPT. All F-1 students must obtain CPT work authorization from International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS) prior to starting co-op employment. *Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a type of work authorization that international students may access following graduation. In order to use OPT, you must first apply and be approved. OPT allows international students to work in the U.S. for a dedicated period of time, without having to be sponsored by an employer. For more information, please contact ISSS. See the back of this form for their contact information.
