v MDSC1102 Skills for Medical Scientists 1

Welcome and Overview Welcome to the Workshops for MDSC1102! Five 2-hour workshops will be held across the semester and there will be one 1-hour computer lab. There is a choice of time for you to attend the workshop and computer lab. You will need to REGISTER into only ONE workshop class and ONE computer lab. It is important that you consistently attend the workshop that you have registered in. Workshops will not be repeated on other days. Students who do not register before the end of Week 1, will automatically be placed into a workshop and computer lab. These workshops have been specifically designed to support your learning by providing an opportunity for you to apply your knowledge, that has been disseminated in lectures, to guided activities. The small group format allows you to engage with your peers, addresses gaps in your knowledge and helps you develop skills in critical thinking, problem-solving and communication. Students will be randomly allocated into small groups at the beginning of the workshop. The workshops will be overseen by a staff member however you will be guided through the workshops by a student who has previously completed MDSC1102 and shown exemplary communication skills. Note that the ability to effectively participate within a group is an important learning outcome of this topic. Important information that will help you all to achieve good group outcomes: • ALWAYS start group work early – it is often hard to get everyone together in the same place at the same time • Electing a chairperson and ‘secretary’ (scribe) can help to facilitate the group process and improve outcomes • Good communication with EVERY member in the group is absolutely essential, no matter how hard • Communication within groups is a JOINT RESPONSIBILITY: the group must ensure all members are included in group activities; it is also the responsibility of EACH individual student to maintain contact with the group • Meetings should be organised so that ALL members can attend. It is reasonable to expect that students will make an effort to be flexible and adjust personal commitments to facilitate group meetings • Group work is INCLUSIVE and all group members must be treated with respect • Tasks must be shared equally and responsibly – no single individual should dominate the group • If there are difficulties within the group (between individuals or to do with activities or ‘process’) it is essential that you work together to overcome the difficulties - this is a part of the learning process - a skill you must acquire to do well in the course and in the workplace. Document your efforts to resolve your difficulties via the Discussion Forum. If the difficulties cannot be resolved within the group, please contact the Topic Coordinator. • Every student in the group will assess and be assessed by the members of the group. The final mark that you receive for your assignment will be influenced by the results of your peer and self-assessment. • All group communication should be conducted through the group discussion forum on FLO. • Students are randomly placed into groups in workshops. Any student who misses a workshop should contact the Topic Coordinator and administrative staff as soon as possible to be placed into a group. If a student cannot attend a workshop, the Topic Coordinator must be informed by email and supporting documentation must be provided within 14 days of the session for attendance to be waived.

WIFI AND QR CODES Completion of the allocated tasks in the workshop will form part of your grade (see Statement of Assessment Methods). Your facilitator will provide you with a QR code to scan and it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that completion of the workshop tasks has been registered in FLO. Students will need to be logged into FLO on their device BEFORE scanning the QR code. The Flinders University wireless network is called eduroam. There are two ways in which you can connect to eduroam and these are outlined below.

WiFi Connection to Eduroam See https://students.flinders.edu.au/support/computing/wifi OPTION 1 If you are connecting from a device on campus and you can see eduroam in your list of available wireless networks, then: 1. Select eduroam 2. Enter your [email protected] and then your password 3. Follow the on-screen prompts, including acceptance of certificates OPTION 2 If the above does not work or you want to configure your device for eduroam from home or off campus, then go to https://join.flinders.edu.au/. This will attempt to configure your device automatically for you.

QR Code Scanner for Mobile Devices In order to scan the QR code, you will need a device such as a mobile phone or tablet that can read QR codes and an appropriate app. Recent iOS has this capacity in the camera app and there are many freely available QR code scanner apps available for android. Note – if you do not have a device capable of reading QR codes, you can register the completion of your workshops tasks by clicking on the Workshop Task Completion link under the Workshops module on the MDSC1102 FLO site. Apple Technology • iOS - iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 11 or newer has QR code recognition built into the camera app. • More information at Scan a QR code with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. • For older versions of iOS, search the app store using keywords such as 'QR code' to find free QR code scanners. Android Technology • The Google Lens app supports scanning of QR codes. Download it from the Google Play store.

WORKSHOP BOOKLET An electronic copy of the Workshop Booklet is provided on FLO (under the Workshops module). It is important that you PRINT and BRING THIS TO THE WORKSHOPS. A suggestion is to print the booklet double-sided and bind the booklet. There will be NO spare copies  ensure that you come prepared.

Workshop Venues The venue for the workshops is the Level 4 Seminar Area. The venue for the Computer Lab is the MTF Lab (Room 5D218). These venues are both located at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) – see Appendix for location map. Entry to the Level 4 Seminar Area should be via the Level 5 stairs. Prior to the commencement of the session, students must wait at the entrance of the Level 4 Seminar Area until advised that they are able enter. Students will be randomly allocated into groups at this stage. Workshop Materials Workshop materials provided to each group for use within the workshop session MUST be returned to the facilitators at the end of the session.

Legend for the pictures used throughout the Workshop Booklet:

Students are encouraged to bring an electronic device

Students must refer to the facilitator’s materials in order to complete the workshop tasks
