FOREWORD BY VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRESIDENT, UCSI UNIVERSITY Welcome to UCSI University. Congratulations to all our new students on your achievement in being accepted by UCSI, one of the World’s Top 400 Universities. Your achievement is all the more remarkable in this time of universal great challenge and anxiety posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been said that the ability to survive does not rest (just) on strength and intelligence but on the ability to adapt. This will prove true and personal as COVID-19 will change many of the usual norms, here and across the world. Before COVID-19, it was estimated that half of the work in your own future life-time are yet be created – hence the need for you to be prepared to change and adapt. Now with COVID-19, that proportion is destined to increase. Education, in particular higher education, has moved from chalk and talk to interactive, engaging classes in flipped classrooms. Now with COVID-19, be prepared for distance learning being up close and personal, with even assessment and examinations conducted online. Yet, there are things which remain almost immutable. Things like resilience, good manners, ethics, interpersonal relationships, critical thinking, innovative thinking, creative thinking (and I would add constructive thinking), effective communications, a sense of wonder of the world, a passion to be with people and contribute to the well-being of one and many, doing the right things right, will remain ever so important and highly appreciated and sought after. Thus nurture these. As you step in and be welcomed to UCSI University, be prepared to give your best in whatever you do, and benefit from being with us. Be attuned to the various initiatives meant to uplift our students, such as the Coop, the Star Trek, student mobility, direct progression to the doctorates, new programmes such as Master of Science (Pharmaceutical Sciences), Bachelor of Formulation Science (Honours), Bachelor of Environmental Engineering as well as the BA (Hons) Entrepreneurship. These are all meant for you. Further, you will be delighted to know that the University is continuously going further and higher. Apart from being ranked in the World’s Top 400, the University is also ranked as one of the Top 10 Universities in Malaysia and Top 1.3% in the World! And we are now among the Top 60 of the World’s universities under 50. For these achievements and recognitions, I am thankful to all staff, students, partner universities, industry partners and friends. In addition, for the third consecutive year, UCSI’s Institute of Music is ranked among the World’s Top 100 schools for Performing Arts. Our Faculty of Business is now one of the World’s Top 400 schools for Business and Management. As we embark on the New Year, we are preparing our students and staff for the new world; one filled with new challenges; a blend of physical, technological and virtual. However, at the heart of all this change, there needs to be understanding and kindness, the desire to do good and be an asset to the community and be humane and polite. Develop the skills to work together with others to achieve your goals and aspirations. Be the agent of change, utilising the various opportunities which the University provides. Engage yourself fully in your studies. Be a doer; active and not just passive. Aim high and achieve even higher. In the meantime, practise all the safety measures and SOPs to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as advised by the Ministry of Health and adopted by the University. Go beyond; Be profound: Make a difference.

Academician Senior Professor Dato’ Dr Khalid Yusoff, FASc. DPSK, PSK, MBBS (Melb), Doctor of Med. Sc. (honoris causa) (Melb.), MRCP (UK), FRCP (Lond.), FRCP (Glasg.), FRCP (Edin.), FACC (USA), Hon. FRACP (Aus.) Hon. FPCP (Phil.), FIAS, ISHF, FNHAM, FMSA, FAMM

It is up to you to create the destiny you want and UCSI University will help in shaping it. Undeniably, there will be ups and downs throughout your university life. But do not let your bad days get you down. Rather, have a winning mind-set and move on. However, if your bad days are overwhelming, it is advisable to reach out to a trusted friend. Also, we have the Counselling Department located at the 9th floor of Block G. Feel free to reach out to them whatever the need may be. To conclude, never limit yourself to your former constraints; strive to be open-minded and challenge the status quo. We represent students through which they can voice their concerns, serving as a platform of communication between students and the University's management. We will definitely try our very best to assist you. I wish you all the best here at UCSI University and have a bright future ahead.
