Written assignment 2...

Description

In my opinion, Peer assessment is a “way of assessing a work of a student by letting other students assess it and evaluate it instead of a professor or an instructor”. The reason why peer assessment is used at University of the People is that the university “designed an online university with a goal of creating learning communities as part of a new model for online learning” (Orientation Week -2, 2018). According to this blog, this enable students to be able to learn better since they not only have to study, but also rate and comment their classmates’ assignment. That results in they get better at evaluating others’ work, critical thinking and offering opinions. (Orientation Week -2, 2018). Peer assessment also offers many benefits. To name a few, Chan (2010) claims that this can “reduce the time and workload of marking for teachers, help students develop their judgmental skills and provide more feedback compared to one or two teachers.” However, this could also be challenging to peers in providing opinions about others. For example, they might fear how other might feel if they give a sincere negative feedback. As a result, they might want to only mention the part where other have done well. This would undoubtedly lead to ignorance of mistakes that should be corrected. Furthermore, they might feel unconfident or unqualified to grade others’ assignments. Likewise, when they receive a feedback from other, it might also be demotivating to receive a criticism about a work that they have put a great deal of effort and time in. If this happens repeatedly, it may lead to a mental breakdown that hinder one’s process to a college success. It is one of the greatest challenges to a peer as they need to learn how to manage it correctly. If I need to peer assess written assignments, I will do the following: First, I will read it thoroughly and try to understand the author’s intention, overall content of the writing and

evaluate how structurally easy it is to read. Then, I will check with the peer assessment rubric, whether the content of a writing is relevant to the questions and if all of them are answered in a detailed and meaningful manner. Finally, I would check any grammatical errors before I give a grade. If it meets all of my requirements above and the rubric, I will give it 9 or 10, depend on whether the author use an additional information from another source and cite them appropriately. Otherwise, I will take away points relative to each element it lacks and explain the mistakes in a feedback. But if I am to assess a discussion assignment, I would do it similarly as if I were assessing a writing assignment. The only difference is that I will forgive a discussion post with a lower level of formality since this is only a discussion and not an academic paper. In addition, I will be more careful in giving sincere negative feedback due to its lack of anonymity in the discussion forum as the receiver might take the feedback personally. This could cause conflict and I would like to avoid it if possible. (528 words) Reference
