A summary table for Ricer (REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, ELEVATION, REFERRAL)...

Description

Explain/Analyse (cause & effect)

Critically analyse (good, bad and a recommendation)

Evaluate (a judgement & Why)

Name

Define

Describe using example

Rest

Involves not using the injured area, both, during the game and at home.

For example, a soccer player has injured their ankle and takes no further part in the game.

Explain: This is performed because it reduces bleeding and prevents further injury. Analyse: The effect of this is it reduces bleeding and prevents further injury

Pos= reduces bleeding and prevents further injury Neg= Difficult to monitor Rec = Suggest injured player takes 1-2 days off work/school

Rest is an effective step, because it reduces bleeding and prevents any chance of the injury being made worse, also promoting recovery.

Ice

This refers to applying a cooling agent to the injured area.

Once an athlete has injured themselves ice should be applied as soon as possible. Ice can often be in the form of an ice pack, or a bag of ice.

Explain: the ice causes the arteries around the area to narrow Analyse: reduce pain, decreases inflammation and speeds up recovery

Pos: reduce pain, decrease inflammation, speed recovery Neg: some people may not be able to tolerate the cold Rec: use wet material to wrap around the ice to transfer the cold from the ice more effectively

Icing an injury is an important step in recovery as it decreases inflammation and reduces pain

Compression

Refers to the application of anything that firmly covers the injured limb.

A netball player has injuryed their wrist and applies a compression bandage to the affected area

Pos: reduce inflammation, stabilise joint Neg: can be wrapped too tightly Rec:

Compression is important as it aids in reducing inflammation further leading to a faster recovery

Elevation

This means to raise the injured area, preferably above the level of the heart.

an injuryed athlete lies down and places their injuryed ankle on one or two pillows

Elevation above the heart assits in the removal of fluid from inflammation and helps move the blood and other fluid back towards the heart reducing or controlling the inflammatory response

Pos: reduce inflammation Neg: athlete may get impatient staying still and laying down for long periods of time Rec: explain the risks that could happen if not followed properly

Elevation is an effective step in the recovery process as it reduces inflammation and also allows the body to rest

An injured athletes goes to their local GP and they provide an anti inflammatory drug

Explain: it Is important to control the inflammatory response after suffering a soft tissue injury because if left alone the inflammatory response will cause further damage to the area Analyse: help reduce pain and improve recovery

Pos: reduce pain and improve recovery Neg: may not have a gp near you Rec: call a Gp

Seeking medical attention is important as it improves recovery and also makes sure the injury is being treated the right way.

Referral

Refers to obtaining professional medical consultation.

Explain: the pressure applied helps force fluid away from the area reducing the inflammation at the area Analyse: reduce or control the inflammatory response and stabilises the joint...
