Name: Giovanni Catanzaro DATE: March 1, 2016 ENGL 1302, 31410 Short Story: “Young Goodman Brown” Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne 1. Most important paragraph and why (one direct quote from the work is required. Write a correct MLA parenthetical citation for the chosen quote) ~Formal Attribution Required. In your answer, do not copy the entire paragraph. You need only to quote key words or phrases from the paragraph. Be sure you correctly integrate the key words or phrases, surrounded by quotation marks, in complete sentences: The most important paragraph in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “Young Goodman Brown” illustrates the scene of how is wife, Faith, is worried about Young Goodman Brown: “…of all nights in the year, this one night must I tarry away from thee” (2). This paragraphs gives the audience an idea of when the story takes place. It also shows the audience how long the couple has been married. They have been married for just three months. 2. Most important sentence and why (Write a correct MLA parenthetical citation for the chosen sentence) ~ Partial or Simple Attribution Required. Be sure you correctly integrate the complete sentence: The most important sentence in the short story is when Young Goodman Brown says “Faith kept me back a while” (Hawthorne 2), because it illustrates that “Faith” means more than just the women that Goodman Brown is married to. It represents his strong attachment to his faith of Christianity. 3. Most important word and why (Write a correct MLA parenthetical citation for the chosen word) ~ Simple Attribution if Required. Be sure you correctly integrate the single word, no phrases, in a complete sentence: Hawthorne’s use of the word “Friend,” (3) shows the reader that Goodman Brown could be related to the nameless old man or even be viewing his future self in the short story. It is a mystery throughout the first half of “Young Goodman Brown” and continues the boggle the mind of the reader in the upcoming pages.

4. What surprised you the most? What surprised me most is the concept that the old man could possibly be Young Goodman Brown’s future self or relative. When I first read the story by myself, I did not believe or even come to the fact that it could be a possibility. You come to realize that if you read on, you will see that it is a big possibility. We come to find out that the old man is the devil. 5. What makes the character(s) believable (dress, accent, actions, etc.)? I believe that the staff makes the old man believable. The staff is the only thing keeping me from thinking that the old man is the devil from the very first time I read about the staff. The staff represents so much more than just an object. It represents leadership and it represents a sense of authority and power. Authority being that recognized right. 6. What are some of the aspects of the story that you found humorous, disturbing, confusing, romantic, erotic, mysterious, etc.….? An aspect of the start that keeps me thinking is dialogue about faith. Not Faith, Goodman Brown’s wife, but faith, his religion. We first feel a mysterious aurora among the description of which faith Goodman Brown is talking about. We quickly realize that it could be both at the same time at some points in the short story. 7. As the story progressed, what 4 things did you discover? These could be taken from the plot (actual events & actions), the character(s), the setting, the vocabulary, the style of the writing, your reaction to the story, etc. 1. I discovered that Hawthorne chooses a double life of the old man to play with his audience’s minds on purpose. 2. I discovered that faith can be preserved in a few different ways. 3. I discovered that Young Goodman Brown can represent more than just a troubled young man that is traveling the woods in search of himself. 4. I discovered that you cannot trust anyone, sometimes no matter how credible they are or how believable they are. 8. Write a correct MLA Work Cited citation:
