Description

WRITING EVALUATION: A PERSONAL MEMOIR The word memoir comes from the French word memoire and the Latin memoria meaning “memory”. It is a description or explanation of a past event in the author’s life and is based on what the author recalls about the event. Memoirs should be emotional in tone and use vivid description when possible. A memoir has a theme; a lesson learned by the author which he or she shares with the reader.”

YOUR TASK IS TO BRAINSTORM ABOUT AND WRITE YOUR OWN PERSONAL MEMOIR IN WHICH YOU DESCRIBE AND REFLECT ON A PARTICULAR EXPERIENCE FROM YOUR LIFE. YOUR MEMOIR WILL BE 350 - 500 WORDS IN LENGTH.

A Memoir Includes: ● A personal story from your past ● A combination of the outside story (the events that occurred) & the inside story (what you were thinking and feeling during, and/or after the events) ● A clear narrative arc (conflict, complications, resolution) ● first person, informal voice ● intentional narrative techniques for engaging the reader (lead, suspense, directive or interrogative sentences, pathos) Through this task, we will focus on the writing process: ● Wednesday: Brainstorming & planning ● Thursday: Drafting ● Friday: Self/Peer Editing, proof reading & revising & final drafting

Note: All process work must be included. Final assignments will not be evaluated without the inclusion of process work reflecting ALL stages of the writing.
