ZAPS 1 Assignment

Serial Position Effect (p. 201) 1. What is the idea behind this experiment? What is expected given overall results? What key cognitive psychology ideas are related to this experiment? (1 point) The purpose behind the experiment was to understand the effects of the primacy and recency effect when remembering sets of words. During the experiment five series of 12 words were presented. The goal was to try and remember as many words as you can with each series. The expected results were to have students remember the first couple of words presented in the list as well as the last couple of words at the end of the list. The results shown from the class showed that more was remembered towards the end of the list rather than the beginning and middle. The results I had for myself was remembering words from the beginning, a few in the middle, and more towards the end. Some key cognitive psychology ideas that were related to the experiment was the free recall, where students had to recall the words from the list in each series. The primacy and recency effect were also presented in the experiment, explaining how individuals typically recall words from the beginning and end of the 12-word list. Serial position was presented in the experiment by illustrating the graph that showed the results from the experiment. It pointed out where words were remembered and where words were not remembered.

2. What is the independent variable(s) in this experiment? Be sure to identify the levels of each IV. What is the dependent variables(s)? Be sure to clearly explain what the DV(s) is/are and how it is quantified. Use the graph provided to identify IV’s and DV’s. (1 point) The independent variable in the experiment is how many words could be remembered. The different strategies that could have been used to help remember the words is also the independent variable. With the help of strategies, more words could be remembered. The dependent variables was the series and words being shown. It is the dependent variable because the series and words

could not have changed whereas the independent variable could have. The independent variable was shown in te graph because the amount of words remembered varying with each series. The dependent variable in the graph was the consent stability with words in each series. Something changed with the numbers used in the graph to represent the words remembered and forgotten.

3. Provide a summary of you experience where you interpret explain your graph. Do your best to account for how/why you arrived at the results you did. (1 point) My experience with the experiment that is explained in the graph shows where I was able to remember words in each series and where I struggled to recall other words. The graph explained that I was able to remember some words at the beginning of the five list as well as some words in the middle. As the graph continued to explain, most of the words that were hard for me to recall was the majority of the middle besides a few lucky ones. The graph also explains that I did the best with recalling words at the end of each list.

4. What memory strategies did you find yourself using during this ZAPS experiment? Was rehearsal one of the strategies? Were you able to fit in more rehearsals for early items? (1 point) A memory strategy I used during the experiment was rehearsal of the words as well as writing down the words I remembered after the list was over. With this, I was able to remember words from the top of my head that was rehearsed as the slideshow of the words flew by. I struggled a little when it came to rehearsal as the words continued to go by. In the beginning I would repeat the words in my head as much as I could before another word popped up. With this strategy, I was able to remember more words than I thought I was going to.

5. Do you think the serial position effect would occur if you tried to remember items for a longerterm basis – such as all the friends you encountered in a single day on campus, all the task/errands you ran, or all the Grateful Dead concerts you attended this past summer? Justify your response.

What other factors might be more important than serial position in your memory for friends, errands, or concerts? (1 point) I think that the serial position effect would sill occur during moments for items for a long-term basis. I think it is easy to remember most of the friends you encounter in a day as well as the errands that were ran. As far as the Grateful Dead concerts (glad you still remember that I love them and attended their concert last summer), it is easy for me to remember the majority of the songs played, all the hippies that attended and how I felt during the entirety of the concert. Since I love the band, it was easy for me to recall events when asked about them. What would be more important than the serial position effect is the memory rehearsal. When something important must be remembered, I typically repeat the task in my head until the task is complete. With this strategy, I can remember what I did during the task and before the task when asked about it....
