Prompt: The video "What is History For?" argues that history matters because it provides solutions to the problems of the present. Recall the statement "Those who don't know history won't be able to improve the present." Consider a recent event, either in your personal life or in the news. In a few sentences, describe a way that a past historical event could inform your understanding of the recent event. Briefly describe a strategy for how you could be conscious of presentism (the use of modern values to interpret past events) in the study of those past events. The most recent a long event that has happened in the news is COVID-19. We have had some scary viruses and diseases in the past but this one is on a completely different level. For COVID we could use the systems that we used for EBOLA and Swine Flu. I believe the scientists the history of past diseases to try and prepare and protect everyone on this planet from this super virus. The have implemented using masks and also did studies on how far a sneeze or cough travels in order to figure out what a safe distance would be from someone in case this happens. We have come a long way in the way we use history in our research. There is a lot of technology now compared to when the plague happened with the rats poising people. We are able to do faster research as well as faster vaccine testing with the technology available today because of the past history. If it wasn’t for the other viruses that have happened, we wouldn’t have been

so prepared for this virus. Who knows how long it would have taken to develop a vaccine for this virus....
